RTX 2060 or GTX 1080 for P3Dv5 in VR?

Hi,

I'm currently using a GTX 1060 6GB (with an i7-4790K) for P3Dv5 in VR (it runs okay, I don't have any motion sickness) and I have 2 upgrade choices, a newer RTX 2060 with only 6GB or an older GTX 1080 but with 8GB.

I'm looking for advice, I don't exceed 5GB of VRAM usage but I have textures set to 1024. Should I go for newer faster VRAM or more VRAM?

I do have DXGI errors but only when I exit and re-enter VR but it seems it's a bug in vram usage that causes a crash with VR

Honestly I dont recommend either, if you are going used get a 1080ti with 11gb of ram.  I wouldn't want anything other than a 1080ti or 2080ti for VR in p3d, and a 2080ti is a bad purchase right now as its overpriced and the 3000 series will launch in September.

Agree with the first half. However, it’s worth pointing out that p3d v5 vr uses the full potential of my 2080ti, so it’s actually a good fit for this sim if you can fund it.

Having upgraded from a 1080TI to a 2080TI for v4 (and now v5), I don’t regret the purchase. It was of marginal use in v4 but provides significantly more value in v5.

I agree, I didnt mean to make it sound like the 2080ti would be overkill, because there is no such thing as overkill with p3d v5 and VR.  Get as much gpu and cpu as you can afford, all I meant was that its not the greatest time to invest $1200+ in a 2080ti as they will be obsolete in about two months.  If It were me I would get a used 1080ti, and plan on selling it and upgrading to the 3080ti when it comes out.  With VR in V4 my 1080ti is the bare minimum I would consider for a decent VR experience.

With VR you want to go with the most high performance GPU and biggest VRAM available you can afford.

I recently replaced my NVidia GTX 1080TI 11MB graphics card with an ASUS Geforce  Strix RTX 2080TI OC 11MB.  I do not regret it, it is true that the price is very high.  but for me it is worth the choice.  It is a trade-off you make. In P3v5 HF2 scenery looks very nice and good FPS .

How big an improvement in p3d v5 just curious,cheers

with the same scenery and display settings in P3DV5 I just reached 30 FPS.  Now with the RTX 2080TI (in the same scenery) I get around 50 FPS.  my settings in Scenery objects are all extremely dense, except scenery draw distance is medium.  Display settings;  Resolution 3440x1440x32, texture quality AA 4x SSAA and Texture resolution 4096x4096

Thanks guys for the advice, I would like a 2080 Ti haha but I have a prebuilt PC that I bought several years ago and the power supply is too weak for a 1080 Ti or a 2080 Ti. Right now I don't have the money to build a PC myself but will do when I have a job and an income, right now I want to get the best out of the system for at least 2 years.

Why not just replace the power supply?  I just replaced a GTX 1070 with an RTX 2070 and swapped the 600 watt power supply the computer came with for a 1000 watt one.  Not only does it now drive 4 monitors flawlessly (three 4K 55 inch plus one 10.4 inch) with excellent FPS, the new power supply is modular so you basically just plug in the cables you need simplifying the install and making it cleaner.

I have an ASUS rog G20 with max 410W, 230W for GPU and 180W for the rest, I'm not sure I can get a more powerful power supply

Yes PSU upgrades are super easy and will still fit in your case especially if it's an ATX style...
