Any audiophiles in the house?

But vinyl LPs and turntables will live forever, feeding analog line-level to my amp.

Amen to that. The sole survivor of a 35-year long audiophile quest here, is a Linn Sondek.
Suitably upgraded as required with addons containing the letter “K”. (Is there anything more exotic-sounding than a tone arm called Ittok?)

While analogue is in a class of its own, this now co-exists with a recent top level upgrade of AV receiver plus power amp from Marantz. Joyfully rediscovered is SACD which the Cambridge Blu-ray player can render in DSD, and I think cannot really be bettered for sound quality. So the stack can play media from any local or streamed source.

This all grew into The Media Centre without too much audio compromise: there’s a wall mount 4k TV and a 3D projector, too. There’s 7.1 sound now if required and I found a beautiful pair of B&W 683 floor standing speakers for the front which have a sound stage wide enough to straddle the projection screen.

The space gets a lot of use, but interestingly, flightsim in there didn’t deliver the expected hoopla.
That hobby has firmly migrated back to the PC desktop. Perhaps it’s to do with the need for keyboard and mouse and all the other controls which have no place in a civilian environment.

Spendor are also excellent speakers. Do you know how they got the name? The founder was Spencer and his wife was Doris. 😁 Or maybe Doreen, can't remember. Ingenious!

I think it was an in-joke between the founder of Spendor and Harbeth (who worked together at the Beeb), as the latter's name is a mix of Dudley Harwood and his wife Elizabeth.

Curious if you are referring to jet engine sounds, and what sort of volume levels you find to be a culprit.  PM me if you wish.

I just found that the sim wasn't a natural sound and when you pump that out on 5.1 stereo speakers surrounding yourself by that noise for long periods of time on long haul flights, and doing this for multiple years on end it can't be good over time. But I will also admit other culprits like working in engine factories and a few other noisy workplaces, lots of other contributors as well.

Reducing these things are a good idea as you become aware of what Tinnitus can do, so no more 5.1 speakers on the flight sim and I am fine with that. But I do like listening to records again 😎

I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

I think the primary cause of my T are damaged nerves in my neck, due to cervical stenosis that was surgically corrected successfully about a decade ago (both problems appeared at about the same time).  I'm sure that all those late 70's to early 80's rock concerts I attended lent a considerable hand, and I'm still constantly on the lookout for anything that can make things worse.

Back on topic:  the stars of my hifi system are my speakers.  I have a pair of two way monitors with Dynadio drivers, coupled with a stereo pair of subwoofers that each have 2 10" driver in a push-pull configuration.  The subs are passive, their crossovers are designed such that they seamlessly integrate with the monitors which are directly connected to these crossovers.  All these speakers are 80's vintage kits from Audio Concepts; I had to have the sub's surrounds replaced about 10 years ago.  My CXA80 loves these speakers.  Surprisingly, it does a MUCH better job driving them with its 80w than the NAD C370 it replaced ever did with its 120w.

Hi scotchegg,

i am a big Klipsch fan, i like the sound they produce (and the sexy look - Copper and piano black), a few years ago i build this setup: KLIPSCH R-28F / RP-440C / RP-140SA / R-12SW

for Movie watching especially in Dolby Atmos & DTS-X (i am not much into music listening tho). All this powered by a Sony STR-DN1080 7.2

and for the best bass effect in our room i run a external DSPeaker Anti-Mode 8033 Cinema subwoofer DSP

What can i say I am more then happy with the result 😁

Not really an audiophile, but I do have a Technics SL-1300 MkII turntable that I bought new.  Like 99% of them, the cueing arm lift mechanism broke.  Since then I found out someone has done a 3d print design of the part and you can buy it for about $30.  But it was such a pain getting that thing apart to the point I figured out what was wrong (this was before I learned they all have this problem) I haven't had the courage to try it again to install the new part.  I do have a pair of Bose 601 loudspeakers from back in the day when they came in heavy wooden enclosures.  I have an old Flight Sim rig repurposed as an HTPC running Win 8.1 that I installed FSX on.  I run the sound through a Denon 3311 AVR and have hooked to a Sony 65 in OLED, but while that looks and sounds good I don't really want to use it for simming.

Have a pair of ELAC FS 197 floor speakers and an ELAC 12" Sub. These are wired to a Marrantz SR7013.

Works best for music, lacks the punch that home theatre setup should have IMHO.

My "go to"-tune when I want to convince people who question if it is "worth it" (lol) is Dire Straits - Your latest Trick.
