100 Hours to go!

There is a possibility that you will be spending the day on Avsim waiting for the game to download and install.

I think you're right.  So I'll be flying the Jug, while I await FS2020 to download... 😄

My plan:

Friday - Visit the bank and pay off my mortgage, leaving me totally debt-free, allowing for all my funds to pay for MSFS add-ons!

Saturday - Make the last few flights in P3D.

Sunday - De-commission the P3D PC and place it in exile in the storage cupboard with all the other old PCs and their simulators that I'll never fly again (don't know why I've never got round to sending them to the computer recycling centre).

Monday - Set up the new MSFS PC and the other new toys I've bought for it. At midnight, press the big button and wait for fulfilment - could take a while....!

Tuesday - Spend the entire day exploring the whole new flight simulator world 🙂

Wednesday - Pull the P3D PC out of the storage cupboard and set it up again because, based on download speeds, MSFS will be ready to play sometime around the beginning of the following week.

🤣

I was wondering if it was going to be deployed before Tuesday to preload like new Steam games tend to? It would then just need to unpack on Tuesday. I've checked out my HDDs and can't see that has occurred yet.

Unfortunately it seems this is not the case... 😞

As far as I've been able to figure out, no pre-load will be available for Steam or Microsoft Store. I was really hoping they'd allow it a couple of days before.

I've since learned that the download is 90GB in size.

I checked out https://downloadtimecalculator.com/

Over a 1 Gbps broadband connection, it estimates 90GB will take 12 min 53 sec.

TBH, i'll be happy if it is less than an hour.

When i plugged in the figures for a 2 Mbps connection which I had once and know some people in more remote locations still have, it works out at 4 days 11 hours 22 min 27 sec.

Of course, that doesn't take into account how much bandwidth you actually have available if the servers are being maxxed out due to the number of other people downloading at the same time.😉

But, using the above, I'd be waiting 5 hours 57 minutes 54 seconds. Under 6 hours, yay!😁

Probably closer to 10 hours than 6 in reality, I expect.😶

Ive seen some people suggesting that modern CDNs have made server jams a thing of the past, but I’m sure Aug 18th will test that idea.

By shear luck I’m on vacation next week so I can stay up late if need be to start the download.  I’m not exactly sure what time it releases here (UTC-3)

Remember that it might be worthwhile to have Delivery Optimization set up in Windows 10 to speed things up:

Start>Settings>Update & Security>Delivery Optimization>Allow Downloads from other PCs>On>PCs on my local network, and PCs on the Internet.

Normally I'd leave that restricted to local network only, for utmost security, but in this case...

See you in the sim!

Thanks Ryan. Yes, it's a marvellous feeling knowing that I don't have to give the bank wads of money each month now!

May all your landings be safe ones!
