Stuck on 'Press Any Key to Start'

Recommended Posts

was anyone else able to do the main 95GB download on a different SSD than C? i tried first time to download to a secondary SSD (D) and it just put up a blue bar that never moved.

i uninstalled and tried again, this time letting it point to C, and now it's downloading. However I don't want all of this on my C drive... 😒

Seemed to be able to pick a different drive here. Directed it to my dedicated F: SSD and it's downloading there now...

well shoot. i'm stuck with the ol' C. I hope there's an option to move the files somewhere else after install. Though knowing microsoft, i doubt it.

it seemed like a really strange location to place the bulk of the datafiles. I mean, in a hidden folder "AppData"... say what? would have been nice if it just stayed in its original install folder like a good boy

I had to create a new folder (MSFS) on my F: drive then just pointed it to that. I had a warning saying I didn't have enough space when it wanted me to install to the C drive. Hope it works ok..

I had the black screen with "press any key to continue".  Updated Windows, restarted.  Installed the XBOX (beta) app for Windows 10 PC, logged in.  Launched MSFS2020 and it finally worked.

Well. I have finally got it downloading. What a job. I tried everything mentioned on this site and no good. I finally did a full windows 10 reinstall and now Flightsim2020 is now downloading. 😳

I sorted it out now, so if anyone else has this problem here is what I did. Run Windows Update a few times and update everything, I was also missing XBOX Gaming Services and a few other XBOX things because somewhere along the way I removed those apps as I wasn't using them. Everything is updated now.

When MSFS was looking for those XBOX Services it went into the 'Press Any Key to Start' circle

Thanks Matt, your guidance was very helpful. I am in Texas and running 240 Mbps and 1 1/2 hours into download and about 50% done.

I had the same problem. I uninstalled MSFS 2020 and deleted the folder with MSFS 2020.
Then it started from the beginning and installed from the Microsoft Store and now it is installed.

Trying this now and it seems to be working.  Thank you.  👍

Hello all, also in my case the installation got stuck at the black screen with the message "press any key to start". The following has solved the issue: I installed the xbox app from the MS store, signed up with my MS windows account and left it open. Launched FS 2020 again as an administrator and it worked! Sadly, MS has not told us that we need an xbox account.

Hope this helps all of the fellow avsimmers.

Best,

I have solved the problem "Press any key to start" and loop black screen, after hours and hours of headcache:

I missed the xbox app and services, so first of all, you need to:
  1. install Xbox App from microsoft store
  2. open Xbox App and check to have installed:
  3. - Xbox Identity Provider
  4. - Purchase App
  5. - Feedback Hub
  6. wait the installation then run as administrator Flight Simulator from start
  7. Now, you will have to press a key and finally you will be asked to login in the Xbox live with your microsoft account.
  8. continue and you will start to can download or play with your game.

After this experience I will NEVER buy again from Microsoft store, anything. They are totally a shame.

I'm in a perpetual spiral here.

When i click on the three dots to 'Install on my Devices' it says I don't have any linked devices.

So I just clicked on the Install button and it downloads the 100GB launcher.  But then I get caught up with 'Press Any Key'.  It's not doing anything.

I've been through all of the update troubleshooting scenarios.  Same issue.

Lots of great advice on this forum. Thank you everyone! I just created an account to say I had the same situation, being stuck on the "Press any key to start" screen. What I did to resolve this was:

1. Install all the Windows updates. Reboot.

2. Install Xbox (beta) and the Xbox game bar app from the Microsoft store.

3. Launch the Xbox app. Sign in to the xbox app. I was then prompted to install the Xbox identity provider app before I can sign in, so I clicked the Install now link there to install it. Then it allowed me to sign in to xbox and create an xbox profile.

4. Launch Microsoft Flight Simulator from the Xbox app. Then I was prompted to sign in again in MSFS. Then I was able to  get past the Press any key to start screen and begin the download.

Hope this helps some of you.

I have to say this is total bs.  Having to get an Xbox app, installing an identity provider - what else?  No thank you.  I think it's time for a refund until all of this is straightened out.  Quite the disappointment.
