Taxiway Names Do NOT Match Real Life

Recommended Posts

No competing sim has this problem. P3D, X-plane and even FSX-SE have properly named taxiways. The fact that another sim was missing this feature years ago does not excuse Asobo. It’s a surprising design choice that’s going to cause a fair bit of hassle for a lot of people.

That can only be said of X-Plane in recent years, because for a long time the majority of XP airports had completely generic and fictitious taxiways, where even the layout was nothing close to the real world. The situation is much better now, but in no small measure because of customer- edited airports submitted to the XP scenery gateway.

The problem with taxiways is that in most cases there is no digital database from which taxiway numbers can be automatically extracted. For most airports, assigning the all correct names would require a human, using an airport scenery editor while referencing a printed airport chart.

Be that as it may, the other Sims thought it important enough to do. This will effect quite a lot of simmers in a negative way. Future real avionics with things like Safe Taxi for instance.

(At least they didn't launch the sim with flat airports everywhere and relied on the user base to do all the airport developing)

If you don’t have a dev team big enough, you always can involve the community, which is a good system.

AS/MS has both choices, involving community or using their dev team, and by now, they used none, but generic airports with random taxiways.

That said, this was known from some time ago. Not new.

Agreed, love the sim but this is not excusable IMO. Hopefully it is updated as this should not be a community fix. Default airports in old sims had accurate taxiways.

For sure, and I think that's the one thing that makes it inexcusable... FSX had it built in haha

The 'other sims' you are referring to is literally only FSX. The only reason P3D has accurate taxiways is because FSX did, the updates with v5 are the first improvements they've made really.

X-Plane default doesn't count since default scenery is literally made by the community.

I don't understand the massive fuss. If they could do proper taxiway signs then they would've, it's something they are working on or isn't feasible to do with the data they have. Either way imo could be worse.

I seriously don't see how a brand new "sim" doesn't have accurate taxiways.  This is critical to online flight.  What a joke

Yeah I’m with you & Im doing all I can to make this issue clear to Asobo.

Can’t believe this was never in the feedback pipeline as a recognized issue. I had suspicions that it was an issue after watching a few preview videos a month ago, but now that it’s confirmed and isn’t even on the request list is a bummer.

Everyone, do all you can to make your voices heard about this. This matters to us!! More than the height of trees!

I'll make a bug report as well.  To be honest, I've been a beta tester for months and I'm embarrassed I didn't catch this sooner.  I always recognized my home airport had incorrect markings but didn't think much of it since it's a rather small GA airport that many people don't know about.  Combined with the fact that there was no VATSIM for the beta, I just never thought to check the taxiway markings.  It didn't even occur to me that none of them would be correct in this day and age since even FSX had it

Sounds like a nice little job for someone.

How much does it pay?

I have no problem doing this for free, if Asobo can make an EASY way for us to click a few buttons and modify taxiway names (and maybe move signs around to match real life).

Man this is rotten!  FSX managed it 15 years ago so what's changed.....?  Flying online (VATSIM/PE) without something like moving maps for Navigraph or an EFB like Foreflight (does that work?) will be impossible!

"Taxi to runway 23R via C, C, C, C" !!!

Yep, that is one tough kettle of fish to be next to. Nice little flight today around the home town, call for full stop landing and ATC gives me the taxi instructions for parking, What, the taxiways are not marked!!! Poof goes the realism. So ok, it tells me taxiway F, I finally find F on my chart, it's way up the field and I have to traverse two or three other taxiways to get there which are not marked. Of course ATC did not mention that!

I really think that a gateway style of repair (ala X-plane style per previous posters) is the only way this gets resolved in fair amount of time.

Off to the Zendesk.

I feel like it’s time to bring this guy back up again for visibility in the hopes that the team at Asobo sees this. Starting to drive me insane flying on VATSIM and not being able to trust the signs I’m seeing. They’re also WAY too small. Hopefully we get a scenery gateway system going, or Asobo can find a way to read the charts / open street map and get the correct names in the sim.

Surely if the Vatsim controller has an airport diagram, and you have an airport diagram too, then the controller can issue real world taxi route instructions to you in your plane, and you can follow them? The only thing which would actually be incorrect is the signage, and if you've got an airport diagram then you know which taxiway is which, so the signage is irrelevant really. Sure it is not ideal, but it can work, so it's a bit overdramatic for people to claim that this is an issue which will make online flying 'impossible'.

Personally, whenever I was moving stuff around EGCC at work, I'd make a point of checking that nothing had changed on an airport chart in the tug because they are always current, but after that if I had to take an aircraft over to Delta to the TRP or whatever, I knew where it was and just took it there, so the only thing I'd be following was the taxiway centreline and the TRP marking on the taxiway or if not then stopping the aircraft so its nosewheel was in line with an adjacent stand or whatever, the signage doesn't really matter that much to be honest, people who fly to and from airports regularly, or drive vehicles on them know where everything is and know all the routes like the back of their hand, so if people really do want to be 'realistic', they too should know them that well, and they can easily learn them off an airport diagram.

This doesn't mean the signs shouldn't be fixed, but I daresay this will happen, and in the interim it's really not the insurmountable barrier to Vatsim which people are making it out to be. Taxiway Alpha at EGGP is still Taxiway Alpha at EGGP regardless of what incorrect sign it might have on it in the same way that me putting a fake sign on the M6 motorway to Birmingham is not suddenly going to turn it into the A35 to Southhampton.

I'm not trying to be negative. I love this sim but makes me feel like I spent an additional 70 dollars for half a** on some things.

You've accidentally coined a new term:

                 half-Asobo

It does seem appropriate given the state of certain features. I'm not that worried about the taxiway naming snafu as I'm going through all my airports and fixing everything else anyways.  Asobo will eventually fix most of the rest of the issues.
