This is my current system:

  • CPU: Core i5-6600K 4 core (3.5GHz) current - overclock to 4.3 [Core i7-7700K (4.2GHz) max for current mobo]
  • RAM: (2 X 8GB) DDR4-2132 (1066 MHz) = 16GB
  • MOBO: ASUS Z170 Pro
  • VID: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5
  • MONITOR: 2560 X 1440 2K (4k capable but never use it)

And I got 2020 gifted to me via Steam (60$ ver) and I am not even going to download it, I assume with this set up I will be very disappointed and I dont want to be.  I may upgrade at the end of the year.  I run Xplane at mid levels with Zibo and can maybe hit 32 FPS max, so yeah...  later this year maybe.

Hi all,

My current system :

  • i7 920 @ 3.6ghz
  • 6gb ram
  • gtx 580 3gb
  • monitor 1080p

If I upgrade my ram to 12gb, do I have a chance?

Waiting for new hardware to come out this year, but itching to try msf2020.

I predict...   pain.

Yes if you upgrade to 12GB RAM and also the Graphics Card.

I'm running an i7 920 @ 4Ghz / 12GB RAM / GTX 960 and it's very playable even on High settings especially if you stay away from NYC/JFK and make sure every inch of RAM is available (ie. no other background apps).

If I have to upgrade graphics card too better wait then. Better save those $200+ for new system.

Thank you!

What clock speed and BLCK / Multiplier you running for your i930 just the standard Auto settings or you overclocking it ?

And the GTX 970 for that matter ?

CPU is running at 2.9 GHz, GTX is standard....

i5 6600, 4 gig graphics card AMD, I'm running MSFS off of a ratty 2tb harddrive. And the aforementioned 8 gigs of system ram. Vsync on. Framerates capped at 20.

As I said, in the air I get around 12-15 depending, not smooth by any means, but (sometimes barely) flyable. Here is another screenshot, in the clouds, 10 minutes out of Tallin airport.

Hey how did you get the perfromance monitor up there or what is it ? Is the 12 meaning FPS

I was wondering if there is an FPS counter in MSFS 2020 - apparently in dev mode there is but not sure how to get to ti.

Select dev mode, then go to options(or maybe tools) I think and it’s in there.

I can’t remember the exact heading to go into, but it is in the Dev mode somewhere.

Thanks yes I should have googled it better but I found something similar in this thread:

https://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/374808/how-can-i-check-my-framerate-in-microsoft-flight-simulator

"You can switch on FPS display in developer settings (Options -> General -> Developers -> enable Developer mode -> new menu bar appears -> Options -> Display FPS). However, its a rather huge overlay and probably not what you want."

Haven't tried it yet as im on work break but does it look the same as what Ricardo posted above ?

Yep exactly the same, Your right in its rather big and cumbersome, but good information on it by giving you ram usage and a vram usage at the very bottom.

Mine's below minimum spec with an i5-3570K and it will run around 15-25 FPS @ 1920x1080. I have a GTX 1060 6GB card as well (plus 16 GB DDR3), setting the detail level down to low or medium doesn't make much difference so I leave it on high. I'm pretty sure the CPU is the bottleneck, it's pretty old but at least I can get a taste of the game with Game Pass Ultimate. Hoping it runs good on the Xbox Series X.

I have an i5 7400 and CPU is definitely the bottle neck.  Try turning down your Terrain and Object level of detail sliders.  I usually put my terrain LOD slider between 50 and 75 and my Object level of detail down to 25.

Those sliders designate how far away from the plane the simulator starts loading higher resolution objects and terrain.  The higher the slider, the further away from the plane this happens which means the CPU has to calculate that much more.  So lower is better.  However at minimum settings the object and terrain updates close to the plane which leads to more object pop in and tearing of the mesh.  You have to pick what works for you.

Another thing to keep in mind, When you first start a flight, the simulator will often put you in the plane before all the calculations are done.  If you start off right away, you are going to be treated to a stuttering mess.  Instead, wait..  Use your POV switch or mouse to pan around the cockpit.  At first it will be gross.  But after the CPU is done crunching numbers, the panning will become smooth again.  Then you know you are ready to go.  Your takeoff will be pretty smooth and your climb out will be nice.

If you are getting huge pauses midflight, lower the sliders even more, so that less scenery crunching is required.

It takes some experimenting with, but you'll find some settings that generally work for you.
