What the heck was going on in Alpha/Beta?

Featured Replies

I think a lot of things will improve.  But probably the control assignments will stay.  They have to have it be operable without a mouse, for the Xbox release.  Luckily fsuipc dropped a beta version today, maybe that might work better?

I’m just really disappointed by the difference between what was promoted, and what we currently have.

I guess you know we weren't responsible for the promotion. 😄  In fact, I was getting pretty sick of the hype myself before I got the Alpha invite.

I think there might have been a discrepancy between what they were trying to accomplish and what they had time to do.

Stop examining details and just fly.  Fly something you're not familiar with and won't care so much about precise performance.  The sim can be truly amazing.  Basically, I'm saying stop gazing into soulful eyes through a microscope.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

I was an alpha/beta tester from day one. What disturbs me is that the performance issues many are experiencing -- including myself -- did not exist in any of the alpha or beta builds. This time two weeks ago, I was flying along at 4K on High settings and getting a good, steady 30FPS. Now, I suffer horrible stutters even if I lower my settings to the lowest possible resolution and level of detail. I didn't complain about performance during the testing because the performance was great during testing. I would truly love to know what happened in the final build preparation that led to these obvious setbacks. Many problems were reported and fixed. Many were reported and not fixed. But why would the release version contain performance issues never experienced in any of the test builds? We kept hearing about how "the release version will be optimized."

I’m trying really hard to stay optimistic about 2020, but I keep finding mind numbingly poor features/decisions/physics that make me wonder what was going on during Alpha/Beta? Was there any constructive feedback or was everyone to busy drooling at the scenery to see the glaring issues?

Just to list a couple.

Flight dynamics! Say what you will about control sensitivities (which should not have to be significantly reduced to make the sim fly able) but I took a 208 up for a quick flight. Set it up for downwind, 1100lbs torque, 1750 rpm, 10 degrees flap. Holding 1000ft, I stalled at 55Kts! What the hell? I should maintain roughly 120Kts! I know, I’ve 3000+ hours in the real thing. It’s beyond unrealistic. How was this not mentioned during testing? Hell, Carenado can do better, and that’s saying something.

Other features/decisions make no sense what so ever. Changing control assignments is a nightmare, as it allows multiple assignments per keystroke, yet doesn’t offer the ability to clear all previous assignments. It’ll tell you what is additionally assigned, but you have to go and find them individually to clear it. Again, did the developers ever try FSX at all. What were the testers doing? This stuff is basic usability, and it’s implementation is atrocious.

Lastly, if I land at on airport, than want to continue to another with gps navigation, do I have to exit the flight and start a new flight entirely? Surely there’s a means of making a quick flight plan change within the flight? If not, I’m shocked.

I really hope things improve, as the potential of this sim is enormous, but at the moment it’s frustrating beyond belief.

So many words of truth! I agree completley! This is, and what we see is the "danger" whan a developer sets a date i this case the 18 of augusti... This sim should have stayed under futher developlment for at least 4-6 months more! Thats for sure.

Just put in my request for refund. I had faith and its been shattered. The state this game was released in is completely unacceptable. I would recommend that those of you who outright purchased the game instead of getting it through game pass do the same thing.

The fact I can’t even keep an aircraft airborne with realistic powers settings is quite disappointing.

They had input from real pilots and had access to the POH. If they got it wrong, it's surprising but should be a fairly quick fix if you bring it up with them with your experience. Aircraft performance is not something beta or alpha testers were responsible for.

I have absolutely no doubt that Microsoft forced Asobo to release the sim early. Asobo knew there were many things to be fixed.

Lets be frank; the game is still a beta. There was nothing that changed from the "beta" build to the "current" build.

As is the same with XP, P3D, DCS, IL2, Elite Dangerous....there must be something these games have in common...

Thank MSFT for running out of money to pay Asobo and demanding a release to get some cash flow.

I'm not sure MS ran out of money. I think it's more likely they noticed the jump in people playing video games under various degrees of lockdown, coupled that with nobody being able to fly anywhere under various degrees of lockdown, and decided they might make some healthy bank if they released it early.

Does that mean you'll be leaving?  Well... bye! 😄

If you're rage quitting, can I have your stuff?

Haha. I appreciate the sentiment, but personally, this sort of approach is not my reason for using flight simulator, and ultimately not the answer for those that do appreciate a realistic flight simulation. I guess it may however have to do for the time being.

I suspect the underlying code for flight dynamics is pretty accurate. But the code supporting joysticks, yokes, controllers, etc., is terrible and provides the sim with scatterbrained input that mimics a poor flight model.

Just out of interest, how many hours did you spend with the sim before you deleted and requested the refund?

You are certainly within your rights to ask for a refund. However recommending we all do the same thing will not help develop this simulator we all want. Again, just give it some time.

My flights all tend to be navigation exercises, without use of GPS or other map aids (and cheats).  MSFS suits my purposes just fine.  As long as speed and fuel consumption are reasonably close to accurate, I can plan a trip and fly it.

I'm not worried about hitting the numbers, because for what I fly, the numbers don't matter much.  Almost everything is seat of the pants.

I've been in since alpha. Can't tell you how many hours I've put in TBF. What I can say is that issues that existed during the alpha still exist now, and whenever devs were approached with these issues and what they were doing to correct them, they talked around the subject or completely ignored it all together.

A direct quote from their last Q/A when asked about autopilot malfunctions, live weather malfunctions, performance issues, and infrastructure issues in regards to their back end was "Its in the backlog". When I heard this, it was a MASSIVE red flag to me and was almost the point where I did not purchase the game. I kept faith and hope that things in the full release would be better. They clearly aren't.

So I say again, for those sticking with it, have fun. I can take the money I spent on this and invest it elsewhere. See ya'll in 6-12 months and after 3-4 patches or however many it takes to get this game up to expectation...maybe.
