Questions for P3D 2.5 to P3D V5 upgrade

Recommended Posts

I now have P3D 2.5 and have decided to upgrade to V5 since V2 does not take any noticeable advantage of my new 2070 Super card.

Some questions for this upgrade

I have Orbx scenery and addon planes like A2A and the Majestic Dash Q400. Do I need to manually uninstall all these addons or can I simply uninstall P3D and delete its folder ?

I have a tool called Flightsim Estonia migration tool which I needed to install some planes. Is this tool also usable in V5 ?

I expect V 5.1 to soon be released. If I buy it now would it be easy to make the upgrade to 5.1 ?

I'd recommend uninstalling them to try and keep things tidy. Remember you'll need the updated versions for v5 (costs may apply)

I think this tool will cause problems. I wouldn't try it.

The upgrade is usually simple if the instructions are followed correctly.

I agree with David's suggestions.

On the aspect of upgradability for v5, more developers allow placement of their scenery, add-on aircraft etc outside the main v5 flight sim folder now, so if you were to install P3Dv5 HF2 now, it should be relatively straightforward to update the core components of P3D (client, scenery, content etc) later when v5.1 arrives.

Mark

Have Orbx A2A themselves said anything about this ? Regarding ORBX from what I can see it is only possible to uninstall piece for piece which mean a lot of work.

With Orbx, I would uninstall everything with Orbx Central, as it appears that it does do some kind of DRM and/or installation tracking.  If you're not planning to start with a fresh rebuild of the OS, then uninstalling the other stuff will keep from cluttering up the Programs and Features page with orphaned software installations.

Most addon aircraft are going to need an upgrade to a 64-bit version anyway, as very few panels are done purely using xml gauges--anything with compiled gauges will need to use gauges recompiled with a 64-bit compiler.  The 32-bit P3D version for the Majestic Q400, for example, does not run on P3Dv4 and above, which are 64-bit platforms.  There is a separately-licensed 64-bit edition that will require a paid upgrade.

I would stay clear of the Estonia Migration Tool with 64-bit versions of P3D.

Minor version upgrades (e.g. v5.0 to v5.1) are usually pretty easy...you just uninstall the client module and then reinstall the new one.  Some can be more complicated if a significant change to the scenery and/or content modules are involved.  Since moving from v2 to v5 is essentially a full rebuild, it'd be easier to do it with 5.1 than to build up 5.0 and then upgrade, but not tremendously so.  That said, I've seen nothing suggesting a v5.1 update is imminent.

Uninstall the client (main P3D program) and then install a new one ? Does not sound simple. Will installed add on remain intact and functioning ?

Pretty much...there are always some addons that need reinstallation/update just about every time even a minor update occurs, e.g. the FSL Airbus, but that's due to their compatibility issues, not P3D. I've had a few minor issues crop up, but never had to do a full reinstall due to a minor version update going south on me.
