Cruising way up high in a systems-rich, semi-modern airliner never gets old. A beautiful sim!

That looks beautiful and very realistic ..

Well done

No shortage of P3Dv5 Scenery being released at the moment on SimMarket, and more to come.

How do know it's "not really designed" for airliner flying? Do you have any knowledge of it beyond what an average user sees? It was released early and the default airliners are still WIP. That said, they are still default airliners and don't compare to what you're used from a highly detailed 3rd party airliner. However, that doesn't mean the simulator isn't designed for 3rd party airliners or that it can't handle them. PMDG and others are already working on bringing their aircraft to the new simulator and what they said about it points right into the other direction: that the simulator is very well capable of high fidelity airliner simulation and I tend to believe them given their position as high fidelity airliner developers.

It's likely one will have to make compromises to maintain performance with a complex airliner, but then again that's no surprise. If you still see performance as an issue, look at the performance boost P3D v5 gained with DX12 and remember that, while MSFS runs well at this point already, it will also go DX12 in the future. We're also getting new GPUs right now that will certainly only make things better.

As for VR performance, you have to make plenty of sacrifices in P3D too to get a good VR experience. It's not like it runs smoothly flying your airliner into a big airport without any sacrifices in settings. I don't see why it would be a greater problem in MSFS.

Looks very nice in MSFS.

Mine was with non EA weather mode and manually set weather. So no real weather enabled.

Like this too :

Just experimenting to make the default weather look a bit like EA ..
When EA gets out of beta we can also enjoy more realistic weather in V5.

The sim designers made choices to allow people to explore the world at low level with lots of detail.

The scenery at 40,000 feet typically looks better with P3Dv5/EA/Ortho than MSFS. MSFS has interesting clouds, but it doesn't represent terrain particularly well from up there (hence high-level screenshots being much less common than low level, with the possible exception of over-the-top cloud structures).

I can fly P3Dv5 VR with PMDG planes without too many issues. It's unknown whether that will be possible in MSFS, many are sceptical based on current performance. Maybe MSFS performance will improve, but that entirely speculative.

Neither you nor anyone else knows how MSFS will fair with complex airliners. The SDK is still being rolled out. There's a large market there if devs can get this right - so they are keen - but it may be years until we have a decent range of high-fidelity airliners. Again, it's an almost complete unknown, whereas P3D v5 provides these features right now.

It looks nice, but sunrise/sunset tend to hide a lot of sins that are present in scenery. If you're wondering if a sim displays scenery well, always choose a daytime pic (I am always suspicious of devs who show their airports with this sort of lighting).

I don't deny that MSFS looks pretty, by the way. That's its main claim to fame.

I currently quite enjoy MSFS, but it very much feels like a game to me. P3D v5HF2 with ortho and EA and VR, combined with either the Maddog or A2A Comanche does a much better job for me of making me feel that I am actually flying.

Your daytime pic of the MD80 (love the maddog) shows a completely dark/black tarmac and very odd lightning scene (are you using some shader tweaks that manipulates contrasts?)

Granted I'm not a ramper but I spend quite some time at intl airport as a GA-flyer, and I don't get the "I'm there"-feeling from those shots compared to MSFS. The real world is bright, we're not living in Dante's purgatory 🙂

But it's not unknown. The simulator as it is right now doesn't prevent high fidelity airliners in any way. The only thing holding them back at this point is the incomplete SDK, but we know that several 3rd party aircraft developers are contributing to the development. There is more 3rd party engagement in these early stages than there was ever before with any other sim and that includes the complex products as well. The developers are keen, yes, but they also know a thing or two about aircraft development and wouldn't be all over it right now if the simulator didn't permit complex airliners or wasn't even designed for it. PMDG and Aerosoft for example have spoken out several times now about MSFS offering entirely new possibilities while at the same time making other tasks easier and faster that previously required work arounds in P3D to even be possible.

From an average customer point I tend to agree in that a lot is unknown to us at this point, but the developers know a lot more than we do and the consensus there certainly has enough weight for me to say this isn't speculative at all.

It's just where I was flying last night. An interesting part of the world that most have never visited, IRL or in-sim. I have no idea what MSFS looks like there, or if the airport is even covered.

Not a post to show how amazing P3D is or isn't. I run with brightness turned well down because it looks better in the Rift S, so that's probably what you're seeing.\

Here are two shots of P3D v5 looking pretty -and not too dark - if that's what we're trying to achieve! 🙂
