That was what I was trying to explain, but you explained it better. However some models have an eye point offset baked in.

Thank you.  A baked in eye point could not be adjusted, and we need to be able to adjust the eyepoint.  I've seen 3D models outside flight simming that had an eyepoint defined as a point in the model, but if our aircraft had one, is it used?  If the cameras.cfg had an eyepoint, it would be used instead.

That's why seats move in all sorts of directions.

Well that was rude. Maybe it's because people come in all sorts of sizes. 😒

Edit: Every time I get in the seat and it's lowered all the way into the floor, and my eyes can't even see the ground in front of me, I want to scream "there's a recommended eye viewpoint!" but the person before me is long gone and there is no one to scream at, haha.

Take-offs are optional, landings are mandatory.
The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.
To make a small fortune in aviation you must start with a large fortune.

There's nothing less important than the runway behind you and the altitude above you.
It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground.

It is truly more convoluted than that Rob.

There are four basic sets of points. The model itself has a clearly defined Origin point 0,0,0 axis normally set by the modeler to be around 25% MAC fore/aft, centerline for left/right wings and height above main gear tire ground contact. This is the only "baked in" set of coordinates.

There is a Reference Point that is arbitrarily defined by the manufacture's designers. All other points in the model's files are based on the RefPoint. Now some modelers choose to set the RefPoint to be congruent with the Origin Point, but no matter its placement the RefPoint is the control point.

The CG point may be congruent with the RefPoint as well, but typically is shifted fore/aft to be around 25% MAC.

Now there has been a set of parameters for the [eyepoint] in the aircraft.cfg file. I haven't had time to look yet, so it may or may not be used any longer.

Thanks for the info Bill. I'm not a modeler but I recall some of them discussing how fiddly it often was to decide on the right origin point, or words to that effect. You are the undoubted expert on this.

The eyepoint is in the cameras.cfg file and it is indeed being used.  I have modified it to change the default eyepoint for several aircraft.

Cessna 172:

[VIEWS]
eyepoint = -3.95, -0.85, 1.9 ; (feet) longitudinal, lateral, vertical distance from reference datum

I changed 1.9 to 1.98

Hahaha there are guys that do that at my airline. They say it's to make it easier to get into.

I call BS on their remarks. It's annoying to say the least.
