How to ILS

Recommended Posts

Can someone point me to a good tutorial, or at least a point by point instruction for ILS in MFS?

I get it to work 1 time out of 5.

Maybe it's something I  do wrong, I expect it to work automatically when I select high or low altitude airways while making a flight plan. Do I just need to press APP when close to landing?
Also ATC doesn't always bring me to beacon capture altitude, and if I try to descend on my own because I see that I'm already too close to the airport and too high, it yells at me to return to the previous altitude.

I remember having to put course and some frequency in the NAV section, back when I was using XP, but those numbers can't be foiund anywhere in MFS

It would help also knowing which runways have ILS systems, because I suppose it doesn't work for every runway, and it also doesn't work the same way for every different ILS technology available.

I haven't encountered a dedicated MSFS on the subject yet but I am sure it will pop-up on YouTube very soon considering the amount of videos for this sim.

You can find the flight pattern for an A320 (the aircraft you are flying I believe) here:

http://www.smartcockpit.com/aircraft-ressources/Airbus_A320-ILS_Approach_Landing.html

Here is a tutorial from Blackbox711 in P3D I believe (the principles remain the same):

That's why we still need pilots 😉

You press APP before the initial fix or to intercept the intermediate segment. Further details by Blackbox711.

Good luck!

First, ATC is a bit messed up. I've noticed that it has a tendency to bring you in way higher than you should be for the approach/landing phases, especially if you're in something fast.

Second, capturing the ILS is going to differ based on what you're flying. In the bigger jets if you have the arrival runway set, it should tune the radio for you (though I admit I have not checked to see if it actually does this). Otherwise, radio tuning should be in the CDU.

As for actually flying an ILS, yeah, the ideal procedure is to intercept the ILS at an angle while flying on heading or LNAV (depending on how your flight is set up and whether or not ATC screwed up the approach) at a below-glideslope altitude. You hit the APP button before you get to the ILS, which will turn your plane onto the ILS. Then when you intercept the glideslope the plane should start to descend.

Here's an FSX tutorial that's good - it'll explain how ILS works and the concepts will apply in 2020 except, of course, where bugs mess stuff up. Best of all, it shows how  to do it in non-hyper-computerized planes.

As to which runways have ILS, if you're in a plane with an advanced autopilot (airliner, the Cessna jets, TBM, etc) you can pull up a list of the runways at the arrival airport. The ILS runways will have ILS next to their name.

I haven't actually had time to verify that realworld frequencies and runway specifics are reflected in the sim. I know the taxiways at the non-hand-retouched airports are often wrong and just randomly assigned, so it's possible that using real world sources to figure out ILS information won't work at many airports. But if it does, then this site (http://www.airnav.com/airport/) will give you the information you need to set up a successful ILS approach and landing.

Ok thanks, I need it also for GA.

It's one of those things that I learnt like 6 years ago, then never used again, and now it's all fuzzy in my head and needs refreshing.

Quick example :

https://aeronav.faa.gov/d-tpp/2009/05310IL24.PDF

1. Tune NAV1 to 108.7

2. Make sure that GPS in CDI mode.

3. Rotate CDI OBS knob to 245 degrees

4. Intercept localizer first

5. Intercept  glideslope at or below 2300 ft MSL

I discovered some very well crafted tutorial here. Thanks for all the links.

I just created a YouTube channel, with teaching in mind. Here is my video on the basics of ILS approaches:

I bought the IFR course from https://www.fsacademy.co.uk/,  and I think it's well worth the 20 bucks.   Reading the ground school manual alone taught me at least 5 things in the first chapter,  and that's before flying that chapter's mission in the sim.   Thumbs up from me.
