For the long flight simmers... what if...

Recommended Posts

I was thinking... for those who love to flight long-very long flights, what if a smart tool is developed to decrease the graphic settings (maybe scheduling it, or after a specific time of "inactivity") in order to reduce the stress for our computers?

In theory "LOD" (Level Of Detail) should be built in, so if flying at 35,000 feet you don't get every stone wall or tree branch trying to render.

One way to reduce CPU & GPU utilization is to lower framerates. The slower pixels move across your screen, the less FPS you need for a smooth image. A still photograph looks great at just 1 FPS! If you're just sitting in your cockpit looking out the window (not much head turning), you could probably get away with 20 FPS and not even notice, assuming you are high enough that the ground appears to be moving slowly. Of course the higher your screen resolution, the more FPS you need for a smooth-looking image (I play on 1080p).

One quick way is to put the sim into a smallish window, which will reduce the workload on the GPU at the lower resolution.  Better still, do that in conjunction with reducing the frame rate with the slider as mentioned above.

I don't know of a way to programmatically change either, so it'd have to be done manually.
