Well, I finally got FSX yesterday. I had pre-ordered it, but it was taking so long in the end I cancelled the order and went down to the shop to buy a copy - the long wait and all the comments here on performance etc had me a little concerned to say the least. I have an OK system but definitely not the supercomputer I was half expecting to need, it's a 2.8 P4 with 2G of RAM and an ATI X800 graphics card (256M).I thought I might as well see it at its worst straight away, cranked up all the sliders to maximum and off I went. As expected the sim was unusable - shift+Z was reporting 5fps but I think it was more like 5spf! Taking AI traffic, water and autogen to minimums gave me flyable framerates, so next I installed the Horizon Simulations demo of their new photoscenery/mesh for the UK to see how photosceneries are handled. I was immediately struck by the high resolution but I noticed a couple of other things - first of all when out of the autogen areas the frame rates and overall smoothness was extremely good, but more importantly for me (as I'm a big fan of photo-sceneries) there were no blurries at all! After an evening of tweaking and fiddling (using the at http://www.fox-fam.com/wordpress/?page_id=41) I eventually got the sim running smoothly in both autogen (15fps) and photoscenery (35fps) areas with a lot less stuttering than in FS:CoF. The key things to do for me was to select one of the 1.x water options and the reduced tree diversity modification. Finally I installed some of my favourite add-ons - Lago Venice, the France VFR series and some spanish photosceneries. Sadly Venice (my favourite) was a mess in FSX, and the French areas had problems too although not as great. The spanish sceneries worked fine though, but with (wait for it) no blurries and better performance than in FS9. No issues with add-on planes yet either, but it'll take a while to go through everything. In the end I have a sim with comparable performance with FS9 in the autogen areas (albeit with more autogen visible than I have in FS9), and much better performance in photoscenery areas (plus much higher resolution when the addons become available). I'm perfectly happy with FSX and other than issues with the addons, and it's taken me roughly the same amount of fiddling as the previous couple of FSes did to get going smoothly (if anything less, although I guess that might come down to experience).

These sort of comments make me sick. How on earth can you validate making comments like that EVER ? There is absolutely NO excuse ever to say that, least of all on a forum. It is a miracle you're still here and active on this forum.Where are the MODS ?This sort of comment makes me want to never revisit these forums againEddy

I shelved it and removed it off my system.I would say I have a high power PC in todays HW environment.I even OCed my processor to 3.0Ghz in anticipation of better gameplay, but to no avail.I have tried the various tweaks and I am still dont think the FSX world comes close to my "untweaked" FS9.1 world with all the addons and I avg 28FPS in the worst of weather, and high detailed urban centers.I can post an FSX shot with all sliders maxed flying around the grandcanyon and get the same 28FPS but when I try to land at say the default KLAS I am lucky to see 10FPS.I have to say for VFR and Bushflying it rocks but I like the heavies and so I am back with FS9 until I see more progression with FSX.I now spend a lot more time flying than I do tweaking and I thought that is why we all buy this product.Andy

Hi Rex I use some tweaks on FSX that have worked very well for my system. The fiber tweak at .25 Auto gen cell count 6000 then the 2nd slider set to sparse the 1st autogen set all the way to the right. I removed the stock FSX AI traffic BGL and put my own AI Traffic Packs from Free ware I have found at Flight Sim Sites. That was it for me. My computer really needs another GB of ram.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/160253.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/160254.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/160255.jpgMy computer spec'sAMD 3800@2.5ATI X1800XL 256MB card1GB 3200 Ram.

I thank you all for your constructive comments and suggestions, although downloading the demo is not an option for me on dial-up as it would take like days to complete.I am envious of those who have FSX working to their satisfaction, however I fear that this product will never be able to draw my money, as it does not appear to handle AI Traffic very well.I just did a check of my aircraft file and for the Boeing B737 family alone, I have over 500 different textures installed. From what I have read, I reckon just those aircraft would cripple the frame rates, never mind all the rest (too many to count). Thanks guys but I guess it's not for me (yet)BC

Have to disagree with you there. Been using FSX with MRAI, World of AI and Ultimate Traffic for since the second day I had it installed. I lose maybe 4 FPS with it. They all work wonderfully so far and will only get better when the developers update the models for interaction with the new animation possibilities.duttonhttp://dutton.fsblogger.com/

Ozzie,First, that thread is about OS licensing and not privacy.Second, OS Licensing and OS Privacy are way out of my area of expertise and outside the scope of Aces and MGS. I can point you to the MS sites that discuss Vista Privacyhttp://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/privacy/vistab2.mspxand Vista Activation and the SP Platformhttp://download.microsoft.com/download/c/2...rotectionWP.docI suggest actively engaging the Windows team on these issues is the way to go, since the Windows team is who needs to hear your points. The privacy link includes a web form to provide feedback, for the SP Platform you may want to use the Vista community pages athttp://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/community/default.mspxand find an appropriate place like http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsv...sing-terms.aspx)I do see that the retail licensing terms link shows a change announced today for enthusiasts who customize, build, and rebuild hardware. I cannot state that change in licensing terms will satisfy you, but its worth digging into and giving feedback.Aces cant really do anything to help here.sorry I cant do more,Phil

AMD 4000+, BFG 7900 GTX, 2 GIG RAM, 2x250 GIG HD RAID-0.FPS does drop at large airports but unlike FS9, I personally find the sim gets extremely smooth at 14 FPS which is where I have it bottoming out now... at the lare airports. I have only tweaked the CFG file, modified the default.xml file as I did in FS9 and that is it.Loving FSX!!!duttonhttp://dutton.fsblogger.com/
