Which Card to Get While Waiting For 3090

Recommended Posts

Building a brand new system right now I will put a 3090 card in there eventually after the prices stabilize.  Was thinking of getting a 3080 but not sure the price and availability right now when it’s released which I think is today.

what options is the best to put one in now when I get the 3090 I will take this graphics card and put it in my sons gaming computer.

any ideas or am I better waiting a few more weeks to see how prices and availability shake out.

I'm using RTX 2070 Super and MSFS runs very well w/ that 8Gb card which offers around 86% of the performance of 2080 Ti I believe, but short of VRAM.  I will be offloading it as soon as 3090 arrives.

3090 for me... I have suffered questionable results for some time now, ever since moving to a 43" 4K monitor. If the 3090 can't 'cut the mustard' then nothing will!

well after the not so great benchmarks from the 3090, I would still wait to see what AMD brings to the table...

Why spend twice as much as a 3080 when performance is only 10-15% more? As Gamers Nexus on YT (and many others) made clear the 3090 is a workstation card not a gaming card (regardless of Nvidia marketing). See, for example,

or https://www.tomshardware.com/news/nvidia-confirms-rtx-3090-performance-10-to-15-faster-than-rtx-3080-in-4k-gaming-limited-supply

Just a personal choice. I have not been in a position to spend as much on my hobby as I would have liked over the years, I am now in a slightly more positive situation and so want to invest in a solid rig that will be good for some time in the future.

@pgde the reason I could think of is vram. P3dv5 and msfs will be dx12. Not saying if worth it or not. But that’s a reason

What resolution are you planning to run your computer and your sons computer on.

someone who says their card runs fs great has no value to you if they run it at a different resolution that you run.

Plus an extra 10-15% is most games doesn’t matter. However in flight sim it does matter. As does the extra Vram.
Imagine approaching Heathrow in a PMDG. You’re struggling for 30fps. An extra 10-15% over the 3080 makes all the difference.

So you can tell the difference between 30 and 33/34 FPS?

Quite easily using g-sync and track IR and a high refresh rate panel, yes I can.

I want to run flight sim on 4K.  I have a 43” tv for that.  For that to happen it might be a 3080 or 3090 card.

my son plays cal of duty and really don’t think he is looking for 4K.

I will wait to the higher memory 3080 comes out or there is availability for the 3090.  Just trying to finish building my pc just need a graphics card to complete it.

I agree with your assessment. I myself run on a 4K screen with a 2080ti. It runs well but I will be upgrading to a 3090 when those become available. I would say stick with a 3080 or a 3090.......the 3090 will definitely future proof you when it comes to vram.

however if the rumors are true, the higher vram size variation of the 3080 should do you well too.
