9900K is snoozing while running MSFS

Recommended Posts

It seems after patch 2 my CPU utilization about halved, and video performance is about the same.  Image quality which seemed to sour after patch 2 looks good in this area, dunno why.  Look how cool and low utilization the 9900K is showing while flying just north of LA:

I have a 9900k and a 8 gig 2080, 32 gigs ram and performance wise I am not all that impressed.

I am noticing in my overclocking adventures, my CPU's (OC'd all cores to 5.0) will clock down to my AVX off-set (4.8) 50% of the time running the sim...I have removed my AVX off-set so I a running faster clocks 100% of the time hoping that will help with the sim-math going on.  FS2020 is using AVX right....I mean, why else would I be seeing AVX-only clocks?

Same here. My i9-9900k has a relaxed job running MSFS with about 25% load on all cores.

I would guess there is serious room for study-level planes that I guess should be more CPU demanding.  And/or....use the thing for something more than just coasting!  Very complex weather I'm in right now south of Vancouver Island and CPU's at 12%!  Great smooth performance, but geez might as well put the CPU to work a little more.

Yes, it's using AVX instructions.

My i9-9900k is running the same since first release and latest patch, it certainly doesn't get overused and I've never seen it go above 50% usage (using msi afterburner). Used in conjunction with a 2070Super and 16gb RAM.

So what might be the conclusion? Will we benefit from upgrading the GPU? My 2080 usually works at around 65 to 80 percent load.

I am planning (not only for MSFS) to get a 3090 later on.

On the surface this seems like a good thing. But on the other hand many effects and LOD settings to have been seriously trimmed down in the latest patch.

So this is not some magical programming wizardry going on, they seemed to simply have removed demanding graphic settings. The water effects for example have been heavily, heavily trimmed down.

I don't see a wave ripple effect at all from anything above 500ft AGL. Draw distances also have been reduced.

The drawdistance is now very obvious. It's almost back to p3d early days.

Run it at 4K ULTRA now you have the CPU headroom.

I run 4K ultra and my 9900k and Ryzen 3900 sit at under 25% utilization.

this is why I’ve put off a cpu upgrade and just concentrate on gpu upgrade for my 2080ti.

Not sure what your settings are. But on my 9900KS, the last core runs at 80-90%. In fact, if I set the settings too high, this is the core that spikes at 100% and causes the stutters.

I have wild performance differences from one start of the game to the other, when fps are below 40 I restart the game, fixed.

Most of my cores fluctuate between 10 and 50% utilization and GPU utilization is around 80%. It doesn't seem to be hitting and one core harder than the other.. I have my Monitor at 30Hz, Vsync on and FPS locked at 60. This gives me a pretty smooth 30fps. I get stutters and 100% GPU usage if I do 60Hz with unlimited. Most settings are ultra.
