9900K is snoozing while running MSFS

Recommended Posts

You can still get limited by main CPU core warning flash up which shows it still has the old problem.

I run 4K ultra and my 9900k and Ryzen 3900 sit at under 25% utilization.

this is why I’ve put off a cpu upgrade and just concentrate on gpu upgrade for my 2080ti.

Trying to get my head round this one you run 9900K and the Ryzen GPU is only running at 25% running full 4K ULTRA settings why upgrade anything.

I have gotten that warning when I was playing with different settings, but I didn't see any of the threads near 100% usage. How do I know which one is being hit? Or, am I interpreting this incorrectly?

My 2080ti is the limiting factor now running at about 80-90%.  I'm hoping going to a 3090 will help the bottleneck.

I'm also waiting on the new Ryzen processors as a replacement for my 3900 as it runs MSFS better than my 9900k.

Have yet to get anywhere near the main CPU core getting maxed, so no I strongly disagree, at least for this 9900K.

CPU utilization will go up or down depending on the area you're flying in.

On average, my R9 3900X will be working at 40-50% on the first 6 cores (4 of them are the sim, 2 are Plan-G and other addons), and the remaining 6 cores don't do much.

My RTX 2080 Super is pegged at 98% no matter where I fly.

I watched a good video on 2080ti vs 3080, and it turns out the 3080 is about 24% faster on average at 4K resolution in Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Forgive me if this makes no sense. OC'ing isn't my forte. I just find things that work for others, and see if it works for me.

Is the last thread the "Main Thread" that is sometimes limited? I think it is possible to increase the OC on a couple cores, so is it a reasonable approach to try and boost the OC on that core only?

Couldn’t tell you mate, I had a specialist do mine. I just know all cores are at 5GHZ and that the last core seems the be the one that is used as the main core. I assumed every ones was like this, as this seems to be how MSFS functions?

For me with 9900k, 2080 (8gig), 32 gigs ram, both P3d5 and XP 11 run very well with settings cranked up though with P3d5 I have to watch the Vram.

MSFS on the other had with middle of the road settings is chunky and by comparison looks "cartoonish" for lack of a better word. That considering I am flying only the OEM aircraft has me concerned when decent, complex add-on aircraft become available.

That is the antithesis of my experience on essentially identical hardware.  Something is gravely amiss w/ your setup because what you *should* be seeing with very high end settings should be little short of spectacular by comparison to what P3D w/ Orbx regionals added offer.  And moreover it is so much more efficient that your 9900K ought to be seeing an average utilization of around 25%, which leaves massive headroom for CPU-intensive study-level planes.  Something is amiss w/ your configuration, Windows, or something it's just too far different from my own experience on the same hardware.

Not if one of the cores spikes to 100%. Look at my pic above....

CPU getting maxed out is just nowhere in sight--at all--in MSFS for me w/ nearly all ultra settings.  Now prior to enabling hyperthreading, every few minutes in intense scenery I would get a 2-4 second pause and CPU utilization would hit 100%, for those 2-4 seconds, then settle back down to whatevr as demanded.  HT changed all of that and despite the densist of scenery rarely make it to 55% on any core.

Not sure why my last core gets hammered then. I haven’t changed anything.

I have no idea.  Perhaps another external process?  Ah, but also we are running things entirely differently presumably.  My GPU only needs to deliver 30 frames, and that may be playing a part in what my 9900K needs to do to deliver.  As you know I am vsynced to that heinous, headache and seizure inducing 30Hz refresh rate.  I just need to shoot up some morphine and pop a few ibuprofen and I'm good to go for a 1-2 hour flight .
