Weather is whacked!

Recommended Posts

Well, my live weather is is dysfunctional. Whenever I go to start a flight, the wind @ my starting point is always the same 270 degrees @ 4kts.

I don't recall this being an issue before the most recent patch.

Anyone else having this issue?

Any Ideas for a fix?

Mine shows random weather, example is just now taking off from Orlando. Clear skies in the sim, raining in real life

Also currently cruzing at FL370 through clouds 😞

I'm sure this will be fixed in time.

Just loaded a "Live Weather" flight in Alaska... Wind and Rain seemed close to real-world - - isn't that great!?! Problem: Barometer off by .40 - - holy sheet how can it be that far off?

The sim calls me a liar every time I report something lol.

I wasn't getting turbulence, but then restarted sim and turned off multiplayer and now seem to be getting much more realistic atmospheric effects. WTH?!

Where in Alaska? I’m curious what the MeteoBlue iOS app shows right now for that location vs. earlier today. It appears that the entire Live Weather forecast package that is downloaded from the servers is sometimes 12 hours old. This seems to happen most often in late afternoon or evening U.S. time.

It most definately happens around 12:00 UTC. I saw the position of weather systems revert back to where they were the day before on the map.

I've been flying in northern Finland since yesterday.  Winds correlate fine with windy.com. One oddity I've noticed however is that ATIS often reports wrong conditions. I've had several occasions where ATIS claims 3 mile visibility but as I approach it's more like 50.. 😉

The ATIS is broken. It always gives the visibility as 3 miles even when the actual visibility is unlimited. It also always gives “few” clouds at three altitudes of around 4500, 8500 and 12500 feet, even if the sky is totally clear.

If Live Weather is injecting an overcast layer, the ATIS will report it, but is still reports “few” clouds at two higher altitudes - which would be impossible in a real ATIS when it is completely overcast, because in that scenario an observer would not be able to see any higher cloud layers that might exist.

ATIS does appear to accurately report the current temperature and pressure. Now that surface winds are working everywhere it remains to be seen if the ATIS wind report accurately describes what is being injected into the sim. I have not done enough flights to test it yet.

The visibility parameter is something that needs much more work on Asobo’s part. At present, when using the custom weather dialog to set up your own weather scenario, the only control over visibility is something called “particle density” which represents the number of condensed moisture particles in a specific volume of air.

From a meteorological standpoint that may be correct, but that is not how visibility is expressed in aviation. In the US, aviation visibility is measured in statute miles or, (when visibility is very low), as runway visual range (RVR) in yards. In metric countries, they use kilometers or meters.

The way MSFS does it now (using particle density) would be like your local weather forecast office giving the current relative humidity as “Mass Ratio” which is the technically correct term to describe the amount of water vapor in an air mass, but the general public understands “humidity” as a percentage.

Unfortunately, in the current MSFS weather system, even setting “particle density” to the maximum value will not produce dense fog. The only way to produce heavy surface fog for practicing a Cat III approach is to put a standard cloud layer right on the ground.

All other flight simulators (FSX, P3D and X-Plane) have the ability to set in-game visibility directly in aviation units of miles or yards / kilometers or meters.

After you load live weather, give it a second then click the weather popup over the airport IE your wind 270/03 on the map and it should update. Not sure why we must do it but it usually updates for me.
