I got my MFG Crosswind V2 a few day ago and noticed something different.

On the front cross arm I had an extra 8mm threaded hole about 16mm on the left.

On the rear cross arm  I had an extra 8mm threaded hole about 16mm on the right.

Conclusion: Damper

I ordered one today to prove my theory.

Milan emailed me back that I was correct and will providing kits soon. He is so busy making the pedals so it could take a while.

I ordered a damper from here to see what the difference might be. You will need to provide a 8mm I.D. x 10mm -13mm thick spacer and two 8mm bolts to complete the install.

I will know in a week when I get my package.

Milan was great in confirming my thoughts and helping me size the spacers I needed.

You can't get better than that for customer service!!!

Here is a picture of my pedals. It is version V3 not V2 that I thought. So this is his latest revision.

My damper is suppose to arrive this Saturday.

Must be a very recent development. the serial number on my pedals is about 130 less and I don't have these holes.

I received my damper today. I installed it using two  8mm x 1.25 Pitch x 40mm long S/S hex bolts.

I used 13mm high nylon spacer on the bottom and 3-4mm nylon spacer on top.

It works great and you can go from not even feeling it to having hydraulic pedals.

This is a highly recommended  modification for all that have the Crosswind pedals.

Please also consider the following. The seals in the oil damper create a large amount of friction. You can test this by trying to move the damper very slowly. As the movement is slow, there is little damping. However, you need a large force to start and keep moving.

The effect on a rudder pedal is that this friction will prevent the rudder pedal returning to a neutral center position. If you come slowly from rudder left, it does not return to zero position, but keeps a bit left position. Same when coming from right rudder. There is then a dead zone. In flight you have to keep retrimming.

I would suggest to test this by using a program like DIVIEW. Test with and without damper. Would be nice if you could report here.

I have tested this on another rudder pedal but not on the MFG Crosswind.

I will test this out next week.

Your rudder pedals look fantastic but was out of my price range for what I wanted to do.

Since the MFG Crosswind V3 was setup for the damper and I had ordered two different strength springs at the time of the order I thought I would just try it to see what would happen.

It was only $25 euro shipped so was worth a try.

Overall I can feel the center point and I can adjust the strength of the spring to have it go back to center. The damper at its lowest setting just gives me that smoothness that I really like.

I am pretty sure Milan would not of added it if he did not feel it helped as an option coming soon.

I am pretty sure yours are even better and well worth the cost but I had to set a limit of around 1200 Euro for the yoke, pedals and throttle quadrant.

That is why I chose the Fulcrum yoke, MFG Crosswind pedals and Honeycomb Bravo throttle quadrant to stay in that budget.

Hallo Edward

I was not trying to make marketing for the FlyHirundo rudder pedal and yoke, but rather discuss a technical topic for interested simmers. On first sight, an oil damper might seem to be a slam dunk, but as I mentioned in my previous post, the effect of friction should be looked at. Generally speaking, low friction is an important aspect in the design of a yoke or rudder pedal.
Nevertheless, I am interested what you find out with your tests.

Hi Jozef

I really appreciate your advice on this and will test this out. I did not have my pedals hooked up but when testing with my feet there is a distinct CenterPoint you can feel. This is because of the way the cam is shaped. It is light but you know you are centered and that does not change with or without the damper. Overall I like it much better with the damper than without.

I will post when I do the tests and thank you for your advice on this.

 Hi Jozef

I tested in DIVIEW  and found out the following.

Yes you are correct that the pedal does not center if moved slowly back with the damper installed.

I also tested the weak and strong standard spring and found the strong standard spring worked best when at almost the same spring tension as the brake pedals.

Both with or without the damper showed a slight error .05 -.59 in DIVIEW  that was corrected by adding 2% dead zone without the damper and 3% dead zone with the damper.

In both cases you can easily feel the center position and it was at 50% either way you move the pedals and returned to the center position.

I have 4 clicks on the damper from the weakest position and that feels about right for me.

I do like it better with the damper installed after following your advice and testing and readjusting the spring tension and damper setting.

The 3% dead zone made all the difference in a locked in 50% when the pedal moves to the center position. You can feel and hear when it hits the center position so you know when you are centered.

Either way with or the damper the standard strong spring works best but with the damper it just feels smoother the way I have it under my desk.

Thanks for your help on this as I learned something new.🙂

Here is an article on someone that has tested some of the higher end pedals. I thought it was a good read and describes my feeling with using the damper in a better light.🙂
