Bottom line I7 10700K vs I9 10XXX

Recommended Posts

Any thoughts of an advantage in using a more expensive I9 10850K, or even a more expensive I9 10900K, over the more reasonably priced I7 10700K?
Will the addition of 2 cores really Matter in MSFS? The CPU speeds don't look that different running on Liquid Cooled system. I'm looking at building my next system and so far I have ordered:
BeQuiet  Dark Base 700 Case.
Intel 2TB M.2 NVME SSD
Game Max 850 Watt Gold Power Supply
Corsair Vengeance 32GB 3600 DDR4 RAM (4X8GB)
Enermax Aquafusion 240 AIO Liquid cooler

Still considering :
Gigabyte Aorus Pro AX Z490 Motherboard

I7 or I9 10th gen CPU

RTX 3080TI or RTX 3090. OUCH!  (The reason for some of the money saving choices above)

Any advice or critique welcome.

PS. Why has my line spacing changed in this post?

When complex addons start to arrive you will certainly benefit from the extra cores. Remember the CPU utilization you are seeing now is based on default aircraft.

I personally think that the 2 extra cores are not worth the higher price. In terms of clock speed, the 10900K usually clocks 100 or 200 MHz higher on overclocks than the 10700K. I had no luck with my silicon lottery on the 10700K but it still easily clocks to 5 GHz on reasonable voltages with an AIO cooling. I also get it stable on 5.1 GHz but temps get out of control. From what I read, most 10900K clock easily to 5.1 or even 5.2 GHz on liquid cooling. On the other hand, 100 extra MHz really doesn't make a difference. Just as the 2 cores. The 10700K is the better choice from a value perspective.

As a recommendation, I would either go for the 10700K or wait to see what Zen3 has to offer...

PS: Don't go for the 3090. It's absolutely not worth the price.

Thanks Carlito777,
I'm glad I'm not the only one with that opinion.

I'm staying away from AMDs because the new 10th gen Intels (Comet) run cooler, from what I have gathered so far.

I agree with the 3090 opinion, they will be extremely overpriced, I'll just wait 'till the 2080TI prices get to where they should be after the release hoopla settles.

Thanks for your input!

Is this the 660P?  If so, they aren't particularly good, using cheaper memory.  If you can send back, have a look for a Sabrent Rocket

I doubt there will be anything that complex in the near future, I'm really not that involved in flying really complex AC. Hopefully the 1200 socket will be around for a while, in case I want to add a new CPU later.

Thanks Charlatan,

I was considering a Samsung 970 EVO and may spring for it instead, since I will only need another 1TB.

I own a Sabrent Rocket 1TB that I got on sale and put away I just forgot all about it!. I may just get a second 1TB Sabrent. Thanks for jogging my memory.

The only advantage I see in regards to a 10900k for MSFS is that it usually can OC to 5.2Ghz or higher with HT disabled, which gives you 10 of the fasted cores you can get, all dedicated for MSFS.  This is what Bob Scott, aka w6kd, does with his 10900k build for MSFS.  I also got a meh SL draw 10700k (Asus SP 51) that (just barely) reasonably clocks to 5Ghz with HT enabled; that OC runs MSFS very well, no regrets at all (considering its meh status).  I also agree that a rtx 3090 is not a good choice for its price.  It's more of a workstation/productivity card than a gaming card anyways.  There are indications that Ti versions of 3070 (16GB) and 3080 (20GB) are in the wings and could be released in a month or so...I am holding out for one of those cards to fill out my recent 10700k build (see my sig).

BTW, I did get a 5.2Ghz OC that I use with FSX-SE, though at the cost of AVX offset 2 and HT disabled.  Though without a doubt, FSX-SE is quickly loosing favor on my system.

Edit: The OP should consider if that 240 AIO will be adequate for a 10700k or 10900k build.  It'll need to knock down 220W or more for a 5Ghz or higher OC.  Without an OC it'd be fine.  The 10700k with its default turbo mode runs "stock" at 4.7Ghz as long as it stays below 125W.  If it exceeds 125W for a little less than a minute (or instantaneously at 240w), it automatically starts downclocking until it's running below 125W.  Overclocking disables this feature, or it can be tuned to prevent an OC from cooking out your CPU.

And here's a shameless plug for my Adaptive Mode OC guide.

I've had four (7700K), six (8086K), eight (9900K), and ten (10900K) core CPUs, all but the 7700K running at 5 GHz (the 7700K topped out at 4.9).  In P3D, the difference manifests itself in knocking down the number and frequency of minor stutters that occur when peaking the load at/close to 100%, generally seen when loading scenery and AI.  The difference between 8 and 10 cores is not tremendous unless you really value that smoothness (and I do).  The difference between 4 and 6 cores *was* remarkable in P3D...from 6 to 8 still noticeable but not as dramatic.  In some situations, like pushback at complex airport sceneries with lots of AI and high angular rates when turning on the ground, the 8 and 10 core CPU makes a really big difference.  The size and duration of the loading pause/stutter when an airport came into range in P3Dv4 was significantly reduced with more cores working.  P3Dv5 doesn't exhibit that loading pause at all now with the 10900K.

I have MSFS running on both the 9900K and the 10900K, and with a completely stock sim, it's not a noticeable difference, as the load is pretty evenly spread out except for the apparent main thread running on the last core, which runs at ~40-50% on both with the Beech A36 or Cessna 308 at Denver.  The real question is how much of a difference complex add-on aircraft and other features will make.  In P3D, stock bare-bones sim performance has little bearing on how it performs when loaded up with weather, aircraft, AI, scenery, night lighting, ATC, ground servicing and other add-ons.  I would expect the same effect in MSFS...how much effect a heavy palette of add-ons will have on CPU load is a complete unknown at present.  On the 9900K at 5.0 GHz, the first 7 cores rarely bump up past ~75%, and are mostly hovering down in the 25-35% range.  On the 10900K at 5.2GHz, the first 9 cores are typically at 15-25% with peaks around 50-60%.  That's quite a bit of headroom, so long as the add-on loads take advantage of parallelism well and don't get heaped onto or otherwise bog down the main thread.

Of course the distribution of workload between the CPU and GPU will also be a factor.

My gut feel is the 10700K is not going to leave you wanting for much.  I like having the 20MB L3 cache on the 10900K, and ten cores in P3D has been a very nice experience...but I put that in the "nice to have" vs "must have" bucket.  Sort of the silicon equivalent of "fine Corinthian leather".  😉

Thanks for all of the responses to my questions, I appreciate everyone taking time to respond and I have gathered a lot of valuable advice.

I have settled for the following system, at least for the near future until I can become more proficient with the MSFS.

I7 10700
MSI MPG Gaming Edge
Corsair Vengeance 32GB 3600

Sabrent Rocket (x2) 2TB M.2 NVME

Enermax 240 AIO Liquid Cooler

Gamemax 850W Gold PSU

be quiet! Dark Base 700 Case
Still waiting for the nVidia 3080 or similar to get to a realistic price, will be using my 1080TI 'till then.I

I know they're not the ideal choices, but all the components had good reviews and reasonable prices.

PS. I still can't figure out why the line spacing varies in my posts?????

EVGA has some good 3080 stocks coming in for October. Watch out for their own webshop.

Thanks for the tip, I'll certainly be looking there. I've always like EVGA video cards.
