Trying to maintain VFR

Recommended Posts

Did a quick flight yesterday late afternoon from Gower 6WA2 to KSHN (and then headed SW towards Bowerman KHQM)

I definitely had to watch the fog/clouds in the area to remain VFR

Looking NE towards Seattle

First I attempted to go over it

But then I decided to go around it

Still dodging clouds in the late afternoon light

City of Shelton, WA - and again I'm changing my plan of attack - how to get into SHN?

I decided to do some 360's in hopes the clouds would move away from the airport

It didn't look good....I'd continue an Orbit.  Down here in class G airspace I only need 1 mile of flight visibility and to remain clear of clouds

I finally saw a gap, but I did not enter on a left downwind due to Wx

I let the fog move on again, and departed southwest to HQM...

Well the problem lies with real world weather.  The surface winds are broken at least on my build.  If you manually set a wind you'll get the amazing white caps and stuff.  So in these shots the water is glass.

Great stuff! Looks like some good clouds for practicing your over the top VFR rating (VFR OTT)!

Yeah VFR over the top that's pretty rare thing in the US.  I've done a lot of VFR on top clearances as a controller (not as a pilot yet).  And I've done a lot of SVFR clearances as well.

VFR on top usually requires climbing through a 'sucker hole' to on top then spend the rest of your fuel looking for another 'sucker hole' to let down.  Been there, done that several times.
