Can't get FSX to Run

Recommended Posts

Guest jha38

I don't know whether this particular problem has been covered elsewhere, but, if someone has a solution, it would probably save me hours of "hold" time waiting for MS customer support.Installed FSX without any apparent hitches. It was a rather long process, but, eventually I was advised that it had been "successfully" installed. The on-line activation also was no problem. The problem arises when I double-click on the FSX icon on my desktop or in the FSX folder, i.e., the .exe file. Nothing happens. The program won't load. The initial FSX logo appears, the "hourglass" spins, and nothing happens. Checking the "task manager" during this process indicates that the program is "not responding." I've tried uninstalling the program via the "control panel" and then re-installing and activating the program. Same result - it won't load.Any suggested remedies will be greatly appreciated.JHA

Hi,Do you have any software firewall, anti-virus, anti-spam or anti-spyware applications running? Some of these applications could prevent FS from launching.Mike

Try directly initiating the FSX.exe that is found in the root folder of FSX. (dont use the shortcuts)If this will not start, you have a problem, as you probably already knew.I know this is of little help, but little things sometimes help.

I've tried that, but no joy. It still won't work.

Mike, I did have such programs running during the install process. Does that mean I need to uninstall FSX, shut-off the anti- programs and reinstall FSX to get it to work?

Snap, i actually got as far as getting a week or so of game play before the program shut down with the same problem. I un-installed also to no avail and at the moment in contact with a Microsoft Support specialist to try and fix the problem. Should get an e-mail tomorrow with guidance on how to rectify the problem with any luck.At the moment keep sending of the "Program not Responding" reports to microsoft via the internet and hopefully it will log with someone to make a patch or something. Will post tomorrow once i get a result from the Support team. Turns out you get 2 free consultations from a Microsoft support specialist before you have to pay.

If you had an anti-virus program running during the install (and you indicated in another thread you did), you will likely have difficulties getting the program to run properly. You should always disable your anti-virus program before installing any software (unless you're not sure where the program came from). You anti-virus program is likely not making required registry entries and/or certain files to be installed thinking the files are viruses. Disable the anti-virus program, uninstall and reinstall and that should fix your problem. Hope this helps.Best regards,Jim

JHA,Sounds like you've encountered the corrupt log book bug in FSX. Try deleting or renaming the FSX log book in your My DocumentsFSX folder and see if that fixes the problem. Same thing happend to me a while back. I spent a week tearing my OS and FSX apart (nearly did a machine reformat) when I stumbled across a post about the FSX log book becoming corrupted and locking up FSX at the splash screen.Hope this helps.-Thad

Cheers Thad, the corrupt logbook was the key to the problem. I renamed the file and Flight sim started no problem although all my stats are lost, but at least i can fly, Nice jobHave informed Microsoft of the problem, again, maybe they might resolve this in the future along with the other glitches. you would think that they would update their help pages to known problems.
