how does one get out from endless download loop

Recommended Posts

It all started when, after the last update, the sim crashed to the desktop and, upon restart, MS no longer recognized the sim. To make a long story short, I decided to reinstall it.  I went through the reinstall, and at the very first prompt where the path is displayed, I changed the install drive path.  After 20 hours, the program appears to be "installing" , yet no progress.

I've gone over some of the youtube help for stuck installs, but nothing I've done seems to work.

The only advice is to drop download speed to 2mb/s.

Anyway, as I write this, I've got the installation manager churning files, but I am not sure if tomorrow morning the sim will be installed.

I thought I was one of the lucky ones having fun and not experiencing any issues-- until my first crash. Now I ask myself how can a grown man remain a slave to a very long and difficult installation with no end in sight. I may decide to quit for a few months until I regain my sanity.

This is not a bashing note, but a request for help.

For me limiting download speed to 2mb/s and running the sim as administrator helps.

Oh, and I did also this. Not sure what it does.

A) Disable Window Auto-tuning

  • In the Windows search bar, type Command and look for ‘Command Prompt
  • In the menu select “Run as administrator
  • Enter: netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
  • Press enter
  • Reboot your computer

For me it was a mixed between Netlimiter and luck. I tried about 22 times and on the 23th it worked.

Unlike Steam download system, if you connection is too fast or you have micro cuts, it will restart the file download from the beginning.

edit : also tried netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled, since update 2, and did not get better

If a number of members here experiencing this issue report back that this fix works for them then it clearly should be added to the Tricks and Tips section.  But not until verified by at least several members.  Posts there to address other issues have been put in place that later seem limited in effectiveness.

Not one of the tweaks helped to solve my problem. Even bringing my flight PC to my office with high bandwidth didn't help.

Can we just agree that the updater is a piece of crappola in its current state? Come on, downloading with 2 MBit/s? I had more luck with downloads using ISDN on Napster.

What kind of connection do you have?

My top download speed is 20 mb/s, not fast by any means. To have such an important and large piece of software stuck without Microsoft or Asobo making it a top priority is suicidal.

I simply don't understand it.

I am currently on net limiter at 1 mb/s. I am jotting down the progress that the cryptic bar displays, because when it goes into a loop it's difficult to know without good record keeping.

One of the things that avsim may want to consider is use its weight and influence to have direct access to Microsoft or Asobo for answers that require immediate attention. If it's true that Asobo scans and or listens to what Avsim users have  to say, then it makes sense for an Avsim "spokesperson" to represent its users. Even FS Elite could  take a bolder approach on critical issues such as the right to download without going crazy. I've never encountered a download bug such as this one.

I feel your pain. I had to reinstall the sim twice the last week and each time took about 28 hours. Luckily i was able to solve the looping problem with this thread:

https://flightsimulator.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360016844080-Download-stuck-on-packages-Install-loop

but it didn't solve the extremely slow download. I agree with you that the installation needs some serious work.

Had a similar issue on the initial install way back when. Try uninstalling the sim. Run the Windows Store troubleshooter to reset. Create a brand new FS directory with a new name so that a new registry entry is forced. Reinstall into that new directory.

I had all, and I mean all of the MSFS 2020 install/update problems.  The initial install took a week.  As a previous poster stated luck was a big part of getting the sim installed.  I had also tried 'all' of the tips and tricks too.  When the problems with updates drove me up the wall I did a Windows 10 repair/semi-reinstall.  This leaves your files but most programs need to be reinstalled.  After the repair I have had no problems installing/updating the sim.
