P3D with EA on is a broken sim

Recommended Posts

I feel P3D with EA + Active Sky is a currently a broken simulator because.

  • Inaccurate cloud depiction in OVC conditions, where you have a grey/white ribbon on the horizon anytime you are below ca 5.000ft AGL
  • Abysmal cloud depiction from above (a.k.a waffles)
  • Active Sky sudden re-draw of cloud scapes like it is 2004 all over again
  • Pitch black PBR exteriors / cockpits which need to be fixed by all 3rd party devs (yay)
  • See-through simulator objects at airports (buldings, bushes, trees) when approaching the airport in IMC conditions. You really don't need instruments anymore just follow the shrubbery

So what we have here is a huge step backwards compared to 4.5 hf3 in terms of practical IFR usage.

I am rather disappointed that we are in this situation. And don't mention the jaggy buildings and trees close to the true sky cloudscape..

Off course everything is not all doom and gloom. But I did not expect so many issues that we have with v5.x

Waffle clouds.

Fully illuminated KingAir but weather is OVC  and I have since long penetrated the ceiling, also note the see-through objects from ORBX

Wait for HF1.

Regarding clouds : look for my thread about a fix

I use FSGRW and do not have that grey/white ribbon. No sudden redraw too.

The black objects shining through the clouds is solved in HF1.

I've just moved to 5.1 after my 4.5 wouldn't start properly, so I thought if I'm going through the hassle of a re install I may as well upgrade.

Over all I'm impressed but the constant CTDs are a real pain. I'm only doing short flights in the vicinity of the airport at present but I can imagine for those who put a lot of effort into flight planning and flying long routes it must be soul destroying.

The main issue I'm having is HUDs fading out against the bright EA sky. I'm mainly using the QW 787 and the HUD just bleaches out and can't be read against the bright skies and cloud. I thought this may be an issue with the 787 ( HUD is on 100% brightness) but it's also the same with the default LM military aircraft.

The solution of course is to fly at dusk or turn EA off, but that's a bit limiting.

Is this HUD problem a known issue with 5.1 or have I got some settings wrong perhaps ?

Should not require a scotland yard detective at LM to realize the sim has issues?

it was a rather blunt response to vonmar as to why I havent posted about the issues on their forum. Their forum is littered with these kind of issues, ofc they know.

I find the “Wait for HF1” replies a little frustrating considering for month the usual reply was “Wait for 5.1”.

EA was nowhere near ready to go out of beta with the release of 5.1.

Also colour banding is way more noticeable with EA enabled compared to non EA mode. You can clearly see the graduation of skycolour in higher flightlevel when flying airliners.

Good to be seen in the third foto from SAS443.

Yes.

I see nice images in EA, too. And still it’s very broken way too often.
