A SWEET ACT OF KINDNESS

‘BERLIN CANDY BOMBER’ BEING CONSIDERED FOR PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM

Retired US Air Force Col. Gail Halvorsen became known as the "Berlin Candy Bomber" while serving as a Douglas C–54 Skymaster airlift pilot during Operation Vittles shortly after World War II. The aviator who sweetened the lives of Berlin children is now being considered for a potential Presidential Medal of Freedom.

On November 2, a letter from President Donald Trump confirmed that Halvorsen is being considered for the medal but needs a petition with 100,000 signatures by November 22 for the White House to take action.

Those who wish to support Halvorsen for his humanitarian work can click here https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/award-presidential-medal-freedom-berlin-candy-bomber and share via social media. Individuals will receive an email confirmation that requires a response in order to have their signature count.

Folks, there isn't much time remaining and this petition is  lagging far behind right now:

Needs 93,218 signatures by November 22, 2020 to get a response from the White House

Does the President actually need to have a petition?

I don't see anything that says that a petition is necessary.  I would guess this one has been started to bring it to the attention of (ratzell, fratzell, zipitydingdong, yabadabadoo).  See, I was able to stop myself from a political comment!

Yes, such an award does require a petition, and anyone is allowed to sign. I did so and was not asked any questions about nationality or anything else. The only requirement is to 'counter sign' by replying to an email which confirms that you are indeed the person who signed!

Unfortunately, there are only two days left before the petition has the required number of signatures... 😪

I know the story of the Candy Bomber well, but guys, he's already received scores of honors and awards for Operation Little Vittles, including the US Congressional Gold Medal and the Cheney Trophy.  I mean, what's next, the Rebel Empire Medal of Bravery, awarded by Princess Leia Organa herself?
