MAX_TEXTURE_REQUEST_DISTANCE & TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP in v5

Hi,

Rob posted a video about these parameters - manually increasing the value in order to get rid of the slow loading black textures when panning around.

It worked like a charm in v4, now in v5 I assume we should avoid playing with these as it increases VRAM usage which will result in a CTD?

Any recommendations from your experience?

I actually went to default due to save VRAM.  I am still tweaking with things but for the most part.  VRAM usage is heavier with EA.  My original tweaks disabled EA, and that still works fine with Max_Texture_Request_Distance and Texture_Size_Exp.  I believe you can still increase Max_Texture_Request_Distance a bit more than 1000 and not impact your VRAM that much vs Texture_Size_EXP.  But the graphics in 5.1HF1 are just amazing.  It is so crisp and clean.  And EA eliminates my need to have EnvTex/EnvShade (yay..one less addon to install)

 

With EA - right now I have to use 1024 textures (though VC is always 4096 which is great) - especially on airports like LatinVFR KMIA (PBR and NonPBR).

 

Honestly one needs 16GB+ Video card to really enjoy some of these tweaks now.  Sigh 3090 I have to plane to get it (now is not the best time to spend that much $$$ on a card....)

I use.

MAX_TEXTURE_REQUEST_DISTANCE=32000.000000

Which is half the max draw distance no problem.

No the default is 1000.000000.

Max draw distance slider is.

SCENERY_DRAW_DISTANCE=64000.000000

In the Graphics setting edited to.

 MAX_TEXTURE_REQUEST_DISTANCE=32000.000000

Half the Scenery draw distance no black scenery when panning, more load on the GPU.

Mine is set at 320000 1080ti 11gb EA off.

can someone with more knowledge than me could confirm if it's 320000 or 32000 respecting MAX_TEXTURE_REQUEST_DISTANCE=          ?

For what it’s worth Rob A. originally stated 320000 but people have dropped the zero for some reason.

Thanks, I was trying with that number but started CTD'ing like crazy, still can't determine if that is causing the crashes as I've also installed Active Sky RC3 today.

Watch your VRAM if exceeded you will crash.

I did, it was rounding 7000MB, so it can't be that right? I'm with a GTX 1080Ti and wasn't OOM first "announced" with a windows fisrt and then it'll crash?

I've reduced it and no CTD, strange because I've got lots of MB to spare with my GPU

Currently using 160000 with good results on my 1080ti. Will increase it as soon as I get my hands on the 3080ti with 20GB VRAM next year...

Looking for solutions to the slow loading/dropped out city/airport textures (think DD NYC/Chicago/Seattle etc) when looking away/turning downwind or base come back to find that this aged well.  My 3080ti with 12GB is about 8GB short of what I need to run LatinVFR KMIA and KFLL 😂
