Benchmark results, 5950X vs 8700K

Hi folks, got my 5950X (for MSRP!) and had the opportunity to run a few benchmarks for you all.

Hardware:
8700k (at 5.0 GHZ), Asus Z370-A Prime, 8x4GB DDR4 3200 CL 16-18-18-32, Noctua NH-u14s
5950X and Asus X570-E Gaming, 2x16GB DDR4 3600 CL 16-19-19-39, Corsair H115i RGB PRO XT
GeForce RTX 2080 (both systems).

Addons
Prepar3d V5.1 HF1
FSL a320X (latest)
ORBX (latest)
Aerosoft Heathrow (Latest).

Benchmark Scenario
Take off from EGLL 9L, climb to 3000, turn right and intercept 27L for ILS CAT III Autoland. Entire flight on AP, no panning or changing views. P3D settings pretty much maxed out, but without EA. No weather, clear sky, Daytime. No GPU bottleneck, utilization less than 70% at all times.

Observations
Even at stock, the 5950x gameplay was significantly smoother than the 8700K at 5.0 ghz. Sim, scenery load, autogen loading were significantly faster on the 5950x. There was NO stutters at all with the 5950x, the 8700k has intermittent "regular" micro stutters especially in autogen dense areas.

Looks like Ryzen without SMT is comparable to your 8700K.Only when SMT is ON is there a positive difference.

Did you have HT turned on/off on for your 8700K experiment?

5950x is on avg 10-15% faster than the 8700k at ghz.
 

8700k HT on. With HT off, i get stutters.

Are you some able to qualify  the difference in dynamic lod when you fly between the 8700k/5950x/5950xSMTOff ? Is there a difference in terrain texture loading. 
 

I am still wondering if its worth upgrading my 8700k. I know i want a 16gb vram gpu to replace my rtx2080. EA is now nice with p3dv5.1hf1 but 8gig does cut it on my ultrawide monitor

I didn’t pay attention to specifically just texture loading... but pretty much everything else i was looking at loaded much faster... autogen, buildings, lod, scenery objects. And the sim loaded much faster as well.

thank you, my 5950x is already here. I'm waiting for the CPU cooler then I can also give feedback but with the 6800xt as graphics card.

I got myself 5800X but i am still trying to figure out how can I turn off SMT or overclock since I have been using Intel all these years. I have been trying to find out on Google but nothing comprehensive so far and esp not for P3D. 

1. Would you mind helping me with how to turn off and on SMT
2. Or do you use JOBSCHEDULLER on P3D.cfg for that?
3. Any tips on overclocking on BIOS and how to test it if it were stable?

Download and install AMD's Ryzen Master Utility for Overclocking Control.
You want to click on 'Game Mode' on the left side of the app window and select 'Precision Boost Overdrive' button across the top. PBO is the AMD term for automatic overclocking. It will boost to safe frequencies and voltages when settings left on auto.

On the same page of the app, you can also turn off SMT (Simultaneous MultiThreading). Click 'Save Profile', then click 'Apply'. You'll receive a message about restarting your PC to apply the settings.

Do not create an affinity mask using JOBSCHEDULER in Prepar3D.cfg until you have tried several flights with different settings first. P3D can usually take care of its management of work processes across the CPU cores rather well.

If for some reason your bios doesn't retain the Ryzen Master settings, look up the bios guide or find a YouTube video for your motherboard manufacturer.
You need to locate SMT mode (Simultaneous MultiThreading) and turn it from Auto to Off.

Don't forget to boost your RAM speed (if it is capable) by setting the Extreme Memory Profile (X.M.P.) to the manufacturer's highest rated speed, e.g. 3200MHz.

The app Prime95 is one way of testing you CPU overclock stability.

Edit: If you haven't already done so, don't forget to select an AMD Ryzen Performance plan in Win 10's Power Settings - Additional power settings - Choose or customise a power plan.

Thanks for the tips. I read somewhere that Ryzen Master does not retain the OC (I dont meant the SMT but the OC) settings and people are recommending using BIOS to do so, is this true? I am Using Asus Strix B550F. 

The Memory i understood that, did that with Intel. Do you think going from 16Gb 3200 C14-14-14-34 to 32Gb 3600 C16-19-19-39 will make a noticable difference?

3600 C14 should be doable with these Zen2 chips. As long as you have decent memory. If it can do 3200 c14 it should be decent memory.

I’d be interested to see what going from 8 sticks of slower memory to 2 sticks of faster ram would do to the fps and also the stuttering you are seeing with the intel. While the fps comparisons are interesting, it would be good to rule out such a difference in memory configurations which obviously is not always possible.

Very curious about the sweet spot for core count on the Ryzen 5000 series. I have a 9700k now (8C/8T) and only find that the 5800x is in stock (8C/16T). I had my eye on the 5900x (12C/24T) but am wondering if this will make a difference in P3D?

From your numbers, we can conclude that smt on Rysen does impact framerate. So now i would like to compare a 8700k 12thread versus a 5900x 12 core or 5950x 16 core. I know i can saturate my 8700k with textures to high res and max lod. My question is, can you reach 100% cpu utilisation on your 5950x with smt off ? With smt on(32 threads)?

I dont think i can justify the prize of 3600 C14 and also my current RAM of 3200 can do C14-14-14-34 out of the box since it is b-die, the downside it is only 16Gb. The question is if I move to 3600 C16-19-19-39 32GB, will it degrade in performance?

3600C16-16-16-36 price is a bit too much if i dont see a noticable performance difference with 3600 C16-19-19-39

You should be able to OC your RAM, if you have b-die then you have the good stuff. 😎

For example mine is G.Skill rated for 3000Mhz C14. On my Ryzen 1700 I had it OC'd to 3200 C14, that was all the CPU's IMC could handle. With my 3900X however i'm now at 3600 C14 on the same memory kit.

It will take some research on the internet to find out how to do it, but there is a useful tool called RYZEN DRAM Calculator, by someone called 1usmus. Just google it. Not sure if its working for 5 series yet. But could give you some baseline numbers.
