Planning on a new build for my current P3Dv4.5 installation, a probable v5 in the near future and, depending on TPDs (for decent tubeliners), possibly an MSFS investment somewhere down the road. Budget constraints are an unfortunate reality and there is no way I can stretch the wife's good will to a 5900X / 10900K or even a 5800X. So I am left pondering and vacillating between the AMD 5600 and the i7 10700KF.

The graphics will be most likely handled by the 6800XT (simply because of the included 16GB DDR6).

I've been reading about how good the 5600 is turning out to be but going purely on the 6/12 (cores/threads) configuration would there be a possible downside regarding the above-mentioned sims?

Hoping you could share some knowledge and thoughts.

Cheers!

Don't overlook the i5 10600K, a very good processor, the first i5 to have hyperthreading. I have one happily at 4900 mhz and very good for the budget. Over here today it is almost £100 or 33% cheaper than the i7 10700KF. Of course, you will have to update the motherboard as well, to socket 1200, as you will for an i7 10700KF, but you will be doing that in any case and £100 will get you over half way there.

Well, its in.  Only at stock at the moment, and ran 3dmark.  Outstrips my 3700x in 3dmark with 2 less cores.  CPU-Z benchmark suggests over 20% faster in single core.

Will try and get some P3D and Fs2020 in over the weekend, if I can grab an hour away from the Missus, inbetween putting xmas decorations up 🙂

G'day Ian,

Wondering how the 5600 tests are going in the sims.

Have a great weekend!

Hi There

Not had a great deal of time, but what I can say, FS2020 is night and day from the 3700x it replaced.  So much smoother, and able to run 4k at 30fps no problem, even taking off from the likes of London City Airport.

Only had a quick 30 minutes on P3D, and same story here.  I have it limited to 30fps, doesn't drop a frame and is soooo smooth.

Cinebench has the single core at least 20% faster than the 3700x was, and the multi core score was about the same with 2 less cores.  I'm still stock on the cpu, and not played about with it yet.  Will be replacing the graphics card as soon as quantities of the 3080 or 6800xt become stable, and prices around RRP.  That will be a gamechanger I think.

Hi Ian,

Very interesting indeed. This new AMD resurgence is certainly making it hard to reach a decision, hardware wise. That Intel based rig I was carefully building on pcPartPicker is being strongly challenged by the 5600X and even though the 10700KF can hit 5.0GHz it's looking like the hugely improved IPC of the AMD chip is more than making up for that deficit.

Thanks for the heads up, mate.

Cheers!
