P3D v5.1 Simulator still running but not showing in task man

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am lately always getting the message on starting an item such as SIMstarter / Active Sky saying that P3D is already running, however when I check on Process Lasso Pro or Task manager it is not showing anywhere.

Any ideas ?

Best regards

Keith

I get this a lot (with P3Dv4 though). Something falls over on the way out it it never leaves...

Click on Details in the task manager (bottom left window in your screenshot) and prepar3d.exe should be there. Right click, End Task, Bob's your father's brother...

The cause could be related to something discussed here a while ago where users reported P3D starting up when they switched on their pc.

That was happening because later versions of P3D take several minutes to shut down completely. It disappears from the running processes in task manager because that is reacting to the shutdown instruction, but the background activity continues for quite some time afterwards.

Not sure how long you allow after closing P3D, but you may find allowing a couple of extra minutes will help avoid what you are seeing. This applies equally when you turn off the pc at the end of a session or if you exit P3D for any reason, leaving the pc running. When you select a program like Active Sky it checks if P3D is running and it is probably detecting something left as a result of an incomplete shutdown of P3D.

Hi iwebber,

Thanks for your response, but Prepar3D v5.1 does not show in task manager anywhere until you go to start say Active Sky (also latest update) or SIMstarter (also latest version) and then you see the message "simulator is running" so I am still confused.com

Best regards

I've seen this as well. In my case, it was an executable installed with FSPS' Augsburg airport, called "EDMA.exe". In the Task Manager, prepar3d.exe was nowhere to be found, but my script, which checks if P3D is still running, was reporting that it was. I then had to manually kill the EDMA.exe, and a few seconds later the script would proceed. So, long story short: If your P3D starts other processes (exe.xml, or add-on.xml), the might be the culprit.

You will go on getting this if it finds files left over from a previous incomplete shutdown. Probably something like d.tsakiris posted above.  In most cases it will not show in task manager or process lasso.  Rob Ainscough gave a full explanation in a previous topic. I can't find the link at the moment because the search function is misbehaving.

Just restart your PC before a P3D session. that will give you a "clean" PC.

Not necessarily.  If P3D has not been allowed enough time to complete it's lengthy shutdown process before shutting down the pc, the problem can occur after restarting.

It was discussed at length on this forum a few months ago.

I note looking at your Process Lasso screenie that you have the "active processes" tab listed--I've found that when it fails to completely shut down it is still listed in the "All Processes" tab, but not among the active processes.  If I'm doing multiple restarts, such as working on scenery or airplane configs, I check there, and if, after a minute or so it's still there, I terminate it manually.

Hi Bob,

Yes but as I understand it that list is only a history list and not current situation ( I think this is just  based on the time being shown that you were using the item) I may be wrong here though

“Process Explorer” from Microsoft sysinternals is a better way to see all processes running on your computer - active or “stuck”.
