Reasons NOT to upgrade to P3Dv5?

I would say the leap between v5.1 and 4.5 is not that significant. Especially if you run with EA off. And even with EA the cloud scapes can be very underwhelming if you use ActiveSky. The cloud popping/morphing is very prominent and spoils the immersion alot.

I am not that impressed with LM at all. You can get similar visuals in 4.5 and avoid the horrendous EA colors during dusk/Dawn. This is with ultra resolution clouds 🤣

TomatoShade mops the floor with EA and you are able to control most of the parameters.

I agree that clouds during dusk/dawn have to be improved. Only at early dusk/dawn they look good. At those moments non EA looks better.

The cloud morphing happens at a combination of certain cloud types/light angle from the sun/cloud density. I see it 2-3x for about 30-60 seconds during a 2h flight. As EA looks better than non EA during the day I can live with it (for now..).

Regarding shaders : I use EnvShade + custom tweaks so I can control many parameters in no EA mode and everything that is not cloud/sky related in EA mode. At this moment I do not miss PTA although I have made lots of monthly presets for it.

As V5 has improved performance over V4 I prefer V5. Also for non EA mode.

Everyone has to choose for him/herself 😄

You asked for reasons NOT to upgrade to P3Dv5. Here is my take:

- High VRAM consumption when using complex scenery/add-ons due to DX12 (relevant if you have a video card with 8 GB or less). I have 6 GB VRAM, and it is more than sufficient for P3Dv4. Video cards with more than 8 GB are quite expensive right now.

- The weather with EA on is still buggy, although it has been improved. I have yet to see major advantages over non-EA mode with add-ons such as ENVTEX/ENVSHADE, ASP3D.

- Some add-ons that were released for P3Dv4 in the past are still not officially compatible with P3Dv5. Although they work, there can be hiccups, or they can cause crashes. Future add-ons are very likely to be developed for both P3Dv4 and v5 (such as the upcoming Concorde by FS-Labs), so staying with P3Dv4 will hardly exclude you from upcoming add-ons.

- Since P3Dv4 will not be updated any more, you can count on stability and compatibility.

I agree with Afterburner. While dev support V4.5, there is no practical reason to move to V5 if you have a stable, full of add-ones, V4 installation. Maybe v5.5HF3 would get my attention someday.

And since I have lost any faith in P3D-like development and SDK-complexity on behalf of MSFS, I'm dreaming that one day perhaps LM would bring brand new terrain and lighting engines in V6.

The practical reason in my opinion is the big performance gain.  The EA i'm not sold on and will consider going back to non ea.  I think compatibility is very over stated on here.  I have 2 airports out of the 100 or so I had in V4 that don't work in V5.  The only plane is the 777.  But that is very close now.  I agree with you on lighting engines for sure.  p3dv5 with the lighting engine of xplane would be fantastic.

Those clouds in the screenshot above would be reason not to upgrade. What is that resolution? 144p?

Yeah, folks looking to upgrade shouldn't pay much attention to EA. It's a massive disappointment right now. Not just in terms of visuals, but it basically gimps ActiveSky - there's no real weather simulation happening.

Do the clouds actually look like that? I find it difficult to understand how that could be considered to be acceptable in 2020

I mean, they can look better depending on the scenario, but yeah, the P3D team thought this was good for release.
