This looks interesting - Enhanced Airports MSFS

Featured Replies

Unfortunately, I am still having issues with bleed through / stripes with some of the freeware airports released by Sergio Del Rosso, which I love - Barrow and St. Johann are two specifically - the runways look terrible.

I have confirmed they are fine when I remove the enhancement pack.

Changing the load order / alphabetical order in the community folder has not solved this up to now.  I will continue to trouble shoot and contact the developer with photos.

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Be careful, I think you may be looking at a different product.  My search at PC Aviator does NOT show ZINERTEK - ENHANCED AIRPORT GRAPHICS MSFS

You're right! I was switching back and forth between so many different stores, I confused myself. LOL, that's easy.

If you do an addon check with addon linker do those airports show any conflicts with this mod ?

Good shout!  I checked with the addon linker and the other addon organiser by Lorby (with the new checking feature).

I could find nothing that would cause it.

Faults found in my community folder are an incomplete manifest.json for a UI mod, (which I fixed in a jiffy), and a couple of ModelLib.bgl clashes between Sergio's own airports, (which he is in the process of fixing now he has been informed).  But not Barrow, which he has Modlib fixed, still has the conflict with the textures, but not when I remove the airport enhancement folders.  I am begining to think it is looking like a height/profile type of thing, as the textures seem to clash in slightly irregular polygons where the runway height seems to undulate a bit.  I am unsure how Sergio has put these textures down.  I assume he just used default MSFS textures and just reprofiled a bit.

Nothing showing for any conflict with the Airport Enhancements folders when they are in the community folder - they show as green in the master packages list, and right at the top of the list, but no conflicts.

I'm off to try a few more things...

Could you also please comment on performance impact (if any)?.

Thanks, Ed

Oh my, finally purchased it and I'm really shocked by how much this add-on impacted the FPS on both of my systems, for the worse!. You won't notice any impact only in smaller and less crowded airports, but in the rest is really bad. I suggest to be cautious before buying this add-on.

Do you know how much VRAM you're using?  Your sig says you have 8GB total, which is not a hugely generous amount if you're running a lot of high-res textures.  The main thing I'd expect to cause issues like this is if you're already using up most or all of your video card's memory.  If the textures are larger than the stock ones it could overwhelm your VRAM which can cause serious (and sometimes sudden) framerate drops.

Other hardware limitations are also possibly an issue, especially if your system RAM is also restricted, but I'd look at VRAM first as the primary culprit.

I also purchased this add-on and I didn't suffer any FPS impact even in the bigger airports such as KJFK and KLAX.

I'm also running the sim with pretty much the same specs as you (same video card and processor)

What difference of FPS are you getting in comparison with the default textures?

Could you please try out a scenario at KMDW, runway 4R with the DA62 (I use mods with the DA62, and the WT G1000). Weather with Coastal Winds preset (ORBX & Partner) at 1 pm local time. When I pan aroun in external views I suffer from above normal stuttering.

KMDW was downloaded from Flightsim.to days ago (now payware).

I’ll check with other airports as well.

Thanks, Ed

Nothing I could do if that was the case, but it seems that others are running the addon well on similar systems. On desktop I have 64GB and laptop 32GB RAM.

Thanks for your comments.

For the time being went back to default textures and the sim is running ok.

Hi Ed,

I managed to get the KMDW add-on before it went payware so I did some testing per your suggestion and in terms of FPS, the difference was negligible for me when comparing with the default textures.

Even panning around inside the cockpit and in external view was smooth for me with Enhanced Airport Graphics installed.

DEFAULT FPS

9oB7T8x.jpg

ENHANCED AIRPORT GRAPHICS FPS

87vRslk.jpg

There was no difference for me in terms of performance.

Does the same problem occur at other airports? Perhaps another add-on is causing the stuttering?

Cheers,

John

I can't really make out the smaller text in your images and there doesn't seem to be a higher res version.   From what I can see, it looks like your "default" used something like 3800 MB of VRAM?  (I see 3821).   For the enhanced, it really looks to me like 6485 -- a big increase.    Am I misreading those, or is that what you're seeing there?

I resized the pictures and forgot to save the originals. So I went back and took new screenshots and I found that the VRAM usage was pretty much the same.

DEFAULT TEXTURES VRAM USAGE:  3847MB

Z793uMN.jpg

ENHANCED AIRPORT GRAPHICS VRAM USAGE:  3783MB

rx796o1.jpg

I found that VRAM fluctuates up and down quite a bit when switching views. I think that's why VRAM usage seemed higher in the other screenshot as it had just temporarily gone up after switching to external view.

OK, that makes a bit more sense. 🙂

I did some testing on my own, too, and I was mildly surprised.   This is KCLT with everything except some postprocessing effects that I find bothersome on Ultra, AI traffic on 100% density, both LOD settings at 200, and no clouds:

kclt.png

Without the new textures is on left.   With is on the right.   I went into drone mode, climbed about 100' for better visibility, and turned the camera in circles a few times until everything was loaded and stable.   I was surprised to see that the new textures actually used about 500MB less VRAM.   This was consistent across multiple measurements.

To make sure it wasn't something weird with KCLT, I went to KLAX.

klax.png

Same thing, but a little more... this time it was 1.2GB less with the new textures.

(I was running a bunch of other things on my system at the time, so I wouldn't read anything into the differences in RAM usage, but nothing I had would have done much to VRAM.)

Not sure what to make of that.   I haven't done a size comparison between the new and old textures, but it's possible the new ones have better compression?   I dunno.   I definitely didn't see any signs of decreased performance, though.  FPS were pretty much identical both ways.

Interesting analysis! Yeah, I found that the new textures used about the same amount of VRAM or sometimes a bit less than default which was a welcome surprise.

I did take a look at the new airport textures and the resolution is 2048x2048 which is the same as the Asobo ones.

In any case, it's good to know that the new textures do not have any actual impact on either FPS or VRAM usage

1 GB less VRAm is a substantial saving if you card only has 4 or 6 GB .

My only concern with this mod is the textures posted so far look fine for major centres but seem a little overdone for regional/local airports that see little use.
