Alaska

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys.  Looking to mix things up a bit.  had not previously done much flying in Alaska.  Only thing I had was aerosoft PANC.  Run V5.  All my flying is of the regional and airline type.  I see some good Q400 and 737 flying to be had here.  It's not necessarily critical that I do real world flights.  This morning I picked up Orbx Southern alaska, Juneau and Valdez.  Would you guys recommend any of the other sceneries up there?

You may also want to pick up PAFA (Aerosoft not ORBX) and there is freeware for Barrow Alaska (at the very north of AK) -- PABR, Wiley Post Airport. You will love the approach into PAJN. Get a copy of the approach plates for runway 8.

If you like challenges, you can try to install Tongass Fyords which is beautiful and freeware now. Install looks very manual since it wasn't designed for v5.

Finally, if you like landing challenges, pick up a copy of Dutch Harbor PADU - Unalaska (Aerosoft also I think). Try landing/departing with a smaller 737 on its 4,500 foot runway. Alaska Airlines did it for years before turning the route over to PenAir which used SAAB 340s now.

Finally, you might want to get a copy of Toposim's Alaska Ultramesh. It is more detailed than ORBX and looks spectacular.

Yes, I do a lot of simming in Alaska.

Best of luck!

There's Simwings/Aerosoft PAFA (Fairbanks), and pretty much all of the ORBX Alaska sceneries are very good (PAKT, PAJN, PAGS, PAYA, PAVD, PAHO, PAEN).

There's also a GSX2 config for PAJN that replaces the static jetways with nice animated SODE jetways...I think I got it from the GSX forum download section.

Also, for AK/Yukon there are a good number of decently enhanced but not full-Monte airports included in ORBX SAK and in the ORBX Freeware pack.  Most of the freeware airports need a little ADE work in V5--load the ORBX ADE, go to Tools -> Load stock data, then pull up a list and delete all the scenery objects and signs with attribute IsStock = True.  Save and recompile, and replace the stock ADE (but leave the cvx and objects bgls).  A few also need the rwy numbers changed in ADE due to shift in the magnetic poles.

That gives you a pretty well fleshed-out AK playground--PACV (Cordoba), PAGK (Gulkana), PAWD (Seward), PADQ (Kodiak), PATK (Talkeetna), PACD (Cold Bay), PADK (Adak), PAUN (Unalakleet), PADU (Dutch Harbor/Unalaska), PABE (Bethel), PABR (Point Barrow), PASC (Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay), and CYDA (Dawson) which are all quite passable given that the airports are fairly austere IRL.  Simaddons Whitehorse is also OK...not great, but OK.

I read that all of your flying is “regional and airliner type”.  Still, if you think you might enjoy something else in that neck of the woods, check out Return to Misty Moorings (return.mistymoorings.com).

I suggest a twin prop aircraft, such as the DC3. Then, fly the route that links Skagway to Ketchikan....good scenery....and easy to do in less than a couple of hours. Also, any flights into Sitka are worth the time...again a good destination from Skagway.

If you find yourself up in the northern part of the state, don't miss the easter egg / wildlife at PAOM / Nome Airport.

I've been there twice for VA tours, and each time I see it puts a smile on my face.

Who is the developer for PAOM?
