Crete and Rhodes and more islands

Recommended Posts

For Saturday, January 29, 2021

We will see five more Greek islands!

Departure will be from Kythira's airport (LGKC), a small island between Crete and the Peloponnese. We overfly the tiny island Antikithira and land at Chania (LGSA) on the island of Crete. We cross the mountains to the southern part of Crete, follow the coast and fly through the Samaria Gorge back into the mountains.

samariadckfe.jpg

We head east and land at Tympaki (LG54). From here we head north and reach Heraklion (LGIR), Crete's capital city. On the way we pass over ruins of the Palace of Knossos, which is not well depicted. After a short break we fly just about 12 miles to Kastelli (LGTL), Heraklion's future international airport. Last stop on the island of Crete is Sitia (LGST).

Next are two stops on two other islands. One at Kasos (LGKS) and one about 12 miles further east, Karparthos (LGKP). We overfly the island and the turn towards Rhodes. We cross Rhodes, overfly the city and the castle and end the flight at Maritsa (LGRD).

Flight plans and a short Pilots Guide are available here.

There are several sceneries available. For P3D/FSX ORBX Global or better ORBX European Landclas are recommended. Additionally, you might want:

Chania

Crete photorealistic

Heraklion

Crete photorealistic (other version with other airports)

Kasos

Karparthos

Maritsa

For MSFS we have the following options:

Heraklion City  Note: I cannot use this scenery on my system, I get massive stutters

Greek airports Part 2  Note: You want LGST and LGKC

Greek airports Part 3 Note: You want LG54

Greek airports Part 5 Note: You want LGRD

Rhodes

Kastelli

Heraklion airport

Aircraft: The flight has 390 miles and seven landings. A cruise speed of about 150 knots ground speed will be sufficient. I will be in the Turbo Bonanza, other good choices are the Mooney, the Comanche or similar GA planes. Please fly what you like.

Time and Weather
For takeoff on Saturday, set the simulator at 8:00am local for January 30, 2021. We shall prefer to fly real weather. If the wx is unsuitable we could switch to other settings or historic dates.

Hello fellow pilots.

Much thanks to @Bert Pieke today for putting in the time to get me up and running again. Audio issues were a huge challenge; seems my stereo sound system with sub-woofer has conflicts with TeamSpeak but I found a workaround.

Today we were successful in me on XP11.5+ and Bert on P3DV4.5 and MSFS2020.  I could clearly see Bert in both sims, and he could see me in XP in P3D but not MSFS. We did a short flight together in Spain.

I will be joining the flight in XP on Sat.  We will see how it goes.  I will fill in the spreadsheet.

Thanks, Gunter. This looks to be a wonderful trip.

MSFS pilots might consider adding the following extra bits:

Greek airports Part 1 Note: You want LGKS
Knossos (site of ancient Minoan temple/palace). (Hard to see much detail as you fly by, but a mental image might be fun.)

Hope this helps.

Oh boy, I searched for LGKS and missed it after all...

Thanks Mike!

I don't think I have left any stone in Greece unturned! I've even got airports and islands the Greeks didn't know they had!

Was all ready for this Greece flight but now won't be flying today..(Jan 30th):  Just been informed that we are heading to son's/daughter-in-law (and 4 kid-lings) (leaving very shortly-9am my time) to assist in their house moving today and looks like tomorrow there again with my plumbers hat on to install a couple of new sinks and two honey buckets!  Oh boy! Duty calls!

My back won't thank me for the abuse it is going to undergo but you have to do what you have to do. (Looks like I'll also miss Sunday's trip in the Alps- was all setup for that trip as well. I'll have a blot of flying to catch up on!)

Talk mid-week.

Have a fun flight.

For our Crete-Rhodes excursion, Gunter has produced a brisk breeze to entertain our pilots.

I couldn't even take off with a 45 knt cross wind. It just wasn't doable in the money or the bonanza.

What would a real pilot do?   Well we could sit in the hanger at Kythira and talk about our feats of skill and airmanship till the winds abate.🙂

Here is a suite of screenshots from start to finish of my experience in XP11.5 today.  You can compare this to your sim for fun.

They are a little out of order but you get the idea.  I deliberately played around with the time of day to provide some idea of what it looked like under differing conditions.

Xplane looks really crisp compared to my P3D. I'm really glad I was flying a Realair plane with those crosswinds though. Great flight Gunter. Thanks!
