Considering the normal user group for XBox stuff, if they allowed unlimited free changes it would probably be choas of people changing names to impersonate each other constantly.

It is probably so griefing in a first person shooter or trolling forums for that matter, and getting a bad rep then changing your name is expensive.

It is definitely due to issues with other games over the years. Everything from trolling people in a game and then changing your gamer tag, to changing it to appear very similar to someone else's and try to ruin their reputation. Even limiting it to one change every x number of months won't help as people will just wait until the time period is almost up. On the other hand, charging will discourage all but the most determined.

They've always charged a fee to change your XBL name.  They say it's because they want to discourage people from constantly changing their name and encourage a more stable identity, but of course I'm sure the free money is a big part of the calculation, lol.

They did give people one free name change as of.. last year I think?... because they made some changes to how usernames work.
