Do you still use P3Dv4 - v4.3 or already newer versions?

Recommended Posts

As soon as I installed v5 I didn't touch v4.5 anymore even though it was still installed. Better performance and visual.

Richard.

v4.5 here. I'm not getting v5 with MSFS having been released but I'm not abandoning it until the new sim matures, and that's 2 years away or so.

V5 is running smoother with more FPS than V4.

That was enough for me to buy it. MSFS I have too.

V5 as well.   And of course have MSFS.

V5 for me too....performance increase was very noticeable an it runs very smooth.

Also for me in VR the non rotating volumetric clouds and the gorgeous lighting with EA is great.

By the way.....it is very manageable to keep your vram below 11gb.

And who knows....maybe LM still optimizing VRAM usage and a better CPU multicore support....

I reinstalled V4 recently because some of my add-on planes and scenery don't work in V5 and I was really missing them. I've since used it about twice. Since I fly exclusively using VR there is a huge difference in performance between the two sims. Using VR in P3Dv4 is like watching a slide show compared to V5 to the point I just can't use it, V5 has spoiled me with higher frame rates.

As of now I probably use P3Dv5 85% of the time, MSFS10% X-Plane 3% and P3Dv4 2%.

At this point I'll probably just delete v4 to free up some space.

Quite happy with V4.5. Will skip V5, then it's either V6.3 or MSFS.

The latest 4.5 for me.

I do have 5 as well, however it's just not there yet for me and I'm quite willing to wait to see what LM come out with for the next updates.

Happy to hear I'm not alone. And I'm with you. I installed V5 yesterday and I also consider that aside of a little fps gain in my case and a simpler user interface, v5 is not there yet (EA, colours...) but not very far. Add to that the fact that some of my favourite airports (eg. LFPG) have not been ported yet to V5 or will never be. So at this time V4.5 will remain my main sim. However, I'll monitor closely how V5 evolves.

The reason I changed over permanently was because of the huge gain in performance I get, with more detailed scenery added as well -- True Earth GB for example, which was unusable for me in P3Dv4. And as I fly only in "greater" Europe, where just about all of the airports I used in P3Dv4 were compatible or had free/cheap updates for P3Dv5, it was a no brainer.

I don't use EA (don't like it). The colours are no different to those in P3Dv4. If you looked at me P3D5 screen you'd not notice any difference from the look in P3D4. So, for me, is was performance, performance, performance.

I use my P3Dv4 version of LFPG (the Taxi2Gate version) quite happily. I think most if not all taxi2Gate airports are compatible. What other airports do you need which are missing?

Hi Pete,

Tthank you for your additional feedback and the Taxi2Gate LFPG tip, good news. I'm a little conservative so I like that the compatibility be officially announced by the scenery developer. But look, if it works in P3Dv5, then it works, even without the dev announcement. I need 2 other airports from Pacsim (Taiwan RCTP and Philippines RPLL) but I'll check directly with the developer or try by myself. I just need to solve a virtual cockpit blurriness issue, buy FSUIPC 6 (I have version 5) and ASP3D upgrade for V5, and I'm good to go 🙂

So the issues with v5 crashing a lot more than v4.5 were solved?

I'm buying a new computer after almost 5 years, I'm still on v4.5 because it runs fine and I have zero crashing issues. I didn't sim for the past 6 months or so, so I'm not up to date with the latest and greatest news regarding v5. My plans were to fully switch and invest into MSFS but I'm finding out now that I would need to lower my "A2A, PMDG, etc.." standards way too much to do that at this time. The last thing I want to do though is to buy me a great new machine and switch to v5 and then fall back into the nightmare of CTDs, OOMs, BSODs,... that plagued FSX/P3D for a very long time in the past.

I've not suffered any crashes with P3Dv5 which weren't really of my doing. But I'm not using EA. What sort of crashes are you thinking of? Probably the DXGI device hung ones, or similar, which are related to running low on graphics memory. EA +high settings does that. So, unless you have at least 11 Gb of VRAM (like the 1080/2080 Ti series) you'd either need to avoid EA or lower settings compared to P3D4.  I have 24Gb VRAM, but I don't like EA in any case. Not yet, anyway.

There were a lot of forum posts about P3D v5 CTDs, to put it mildly, when v5 came out. That was the main reason why stayed with v4.5 at that time. I do have 2080Ti though. I just do not want to go down that road again, where I constantly fear the sim would crash and every a bit longer stutter almost gives me a heart attack.

I have been using V5 for the last several days, installing many addons and keep changing configuration to suit my taste. So far the only CTDs I have are related to out of VRAM (once, due to scenery) and CTD due to files installed incorrectly (which already got fixed). Besides those, very stable platform.

Just installed v5.1 and installed some addons and the NGX.

Performance is on par with a 2-3 generation upgrade in CPU. Almost a 10FPS boost from 4.5. Can run the NGXu in FT Las Vegas with higher autogen draw distance 35+ steady FPS and smooth. Less stutters

Unfortunatly , there are some issues that probably will make me go back to 4.5

1. DGXI hung crashes . I don't use EA , VRAM is consistently running at 50% ( i have 11 GB card) .Only running NGX and FT Las Vegas. I really don't have time to test all these Nvidia drivers to see which one is the " magic bullet"

2. Major haze issues. Running Volumetric Fog on basically turns the atmosphere into a hazy mess( kind of like a forest fire). Was happening in v 4 too but the only way to remedy is to use PTA/TS and there is a parameter called SKY FOG TUNING - put that slider all the way to the left and let Activesky control the haze .

3. No PTA /TS - this is a deal breaker. I have some settings that make the sim look amazing. Particularly a shadow tweak that makes terrain mesh more detailed and lifelike. So many other tweaks that are missing too. Tried using EVSHADE but i don't see much of a difference.

4. Strange terrain anomoly in dawn/dusk when looking at the sun. Was not present in 4.5

5./ REX Skyforce  not compatible

6. 4.5 rock solid stability. Never a CTD  in the past year

Caught between a rock and a hard place here. The performance increase and smoothness is excellent , but too many other issues . If a PTA/TS similar replacement is available and the DXGI errors can go away , then it is a no brainer to upgrade.
