February 17, 20215 yr I'm pessimistic: I'm afraid that global warming has already reached the tipping point. All the current measures to reduce carbon emissions and other harmful gases should have actually started in the 60's - but there was neither the foresight, the will, or the technology to go forward. One can plainly see that in the early days of Covid (when vehicle and factory emissions were greatly reduced for a time) that the haze and smog over major cities virtually disappeared. In effect, we would almost need a real-life version of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" for a much longer time period to reverse the damage that the more than seven billion people have produced... By the way, I'm going to file-away that roast beef recipe for future use,

As I said, it's the portion sizes. Most recommendations I have seen from national food guides and doctors is somewhere around 3oz of a lean cut of beef for your daily portion. Yet many happily, and far too often, eat 8, 10 or 12oz steaks, and often not very lean cuts either.

Yes and we can`t feed them thousands starving and dying ever year, and if the experts are to be believed at an increasing rate. now if we can reduce the greenhouse gas CO2 down to %20 we will all die anyway plants can`t grow grow without it. I'm sorry, but I've been a meat eater all my life. I might ask all of you who drive standard automobiles. Would you buy a hybrid or an electric car to do your bit for your grandchildren and their children? Noel Finish your freezer meat off Noel, I will allow that. It's already emitted it's CO2 during its creation, or at least most of it. And YES, absolutely YES, I would indeed buy an electric car. In fact I'm pretty sure that when I can next afford a car it will be electric. And its not just about the environment, they are actually pretty awesome to drive these days.

I know you say that tongue in cheek but... In fact, the planet is indifferent to you as it hasn't a brain, it just is. And the weather damage you have regrettably experienced, storms, floods, for example, are exacerbated by climate change. So if we all continue to consume meat like there's no tomorrow, we/you can expect more storm damage and our children and their children even worse.

Problem is Matthew, there are a multitude of people like you, 50 or above, and if they all have the same attitude that's an enormous amount of beef consumption. We need action now. And if we don't act now, future generations will look back on us with disdain and ask why we did so little, so late. If your grandchildren ask you one day, "grandfather, what did you do to reduce your CO2 impact?" How will you answer? You wont want to say "I left it to you guys". I honestly don't know. Well yes, its huge. Take the cows out of the equation and we eat the plants grown for them. Or plants in their place that we can eat. The mass of animals raised for slaughter amount to 15 times every person on the planet. Meat and dairy is 16% of global CO2 emissions. Quote Given that the climate impact of plant-based foods is typically 10 to 50 times smaller than that of animal products, it follows that switching from a largely meat-based diet to a vegetarian or vegan diet could help to reduce emissions. https://interactive.carbonbrief.org/what-is-the-climate-impact-of-eating-meat-and-dairy/ Quote Conservation is the key to "saving the planet". We should all consume resources in moderation, i.e. not eat big steaks every day, keep the temperature in our buildings reasonable, try to recycle what we can, etc. As long as we practice reasonable conservation and continue to make progress on alternate sources of energy, we'll be fine. There is no reason for alarm or hysteria. There is no reason for alarm or hysteria. I don't agree with the moderation premise. There are some things we shouldn't do at all, and some things we should do more of. Moderation is better than nothing though, as long as we are moderating the bad things.. As for being fine if we practice reasonable conservation and make progress with alternative energy, no not really. We are already beyond the point of being fine. In some parts of the world they are suffering now. We are already committed to considerable warming. There is inertia in the system, even if we stop emitting now the temperature will continue to rise. So yes, there is cause for alarm. Quote Should there be a shortage of beef, or whatever, in the future, then you know what will happen? The price of that scare commodity will increase to the point where fewer people will consume it and will switch to something else. It's Adam Smith's invisible hand at work. If they switch to something that doesn't emit CO2 that a good thing.

To do otherwise now is to declare war against nature and mother earth. A battle that ultimately we will not win. What could possibly go wrong with denying who and what millions of years of evolution have shaped us into being? Our health. Actually, many herbivores have canine teeth too. Its actually the diversity of teeth we have and the enzymes in our digestive system that demonstrate we are omnivores. Trouble is, the bonkers vegans (not the sensible ones) don't do themselves any favours by denying basic biology.

It doesn't work that way. 😁 Plants aren't dependant on the CO2 from our emissions. They got along just fine before human beings started pumping out CO2. As in, prior to the industrial revolution. The small amount of CO2 in air is all they need, and in fact its optimal for them. P.S. Apologies Avsim people... I should have been using multi-quotes. Edited February 17, 20215 yr by martin-w
February 17, 20215 yr when people like Gates,Markle,Di Caprio and Greta stop traveling to climate change conferences in private jets and super yachts , whist wearing clothes made in far eastern sweat shops and typing on iphones made in factories by children then ill look at my carbon foot print. Ill introduce you to some of my buddies at TAG, Netjets and Execujet who order the jets for them, they will tell you how their customers will spend 20k on food and drinks for the trip and then not touch it because they decided had a hamburger at the hotel before the limo turned up and then they will stand up 3 hours later and make a speech at Davos moaning that africa is starving and the world is too hot. ill agree with anyone that climate change is an issue, and a huge one at that, but im sick of the rich and famous being hypocrits and virtue signalling to us common folk, because if they dont, they wont get any TV/Film work because its the "in thing" at the moment to be woke and thats what gets you work in tv/media/film Edited February 17, 20215 yr by fluffyflops
