London Photogrametry is messy

Featured Replies

Is there a way to avoid those melting buildings in photogrametry?

It appears that increasing the LOD and manual cache does not help very much. A scenery with photogrametry on still looks like after apocalypse.

Chris

I don't think there is. It's either all or nothing by turning the PG Off/On in the menus settings.

@Cargostorm when demand has died down a bit you could clear your rolling cache (forget manual cache it doesn't work properly anyway) to force a full redownload of the London photogrammetry. I am under the impression (hopefully not labouring under a misapprehension) that the melted appearance is a result of the servers struggling and then the simulator caching that data which is not at full detail.

I agree with what you are saying, I have flown over London and it has looked really good, on the other hand I flew over London this morning and some of the buildings were developing as I flew towards them and looked very shabby, I also got a message this morning saying my bandwidth was not good enough for photogrammetry, when I have a really fast internet connection. Like yourself I am sure it is server side when there are a lot of people on line.

Of course it was. That is simply a limitation of the technology.

I suggest anybody who thinks it is subpar in the sim just check out Google Earth, find some coverage and then zoom in to similar levels as. It will look just as bad.

You are right that this is a general limitation of the technology...

But still the quality varies between different providers of photogrammetry data.

I did as you said and took a look at Google Maps in photogrammetry mode. If I'm not mistaken, this is the building seen in the photo andy1252 posted on the first page, just click on the little globe in the lower right corner, and then click 3D to activate photogrammetry in Google Maps (in a desktop browser): https://goo.gl/maps/th6rs7pKnofcdDuK6

The Google photogrammetry data still looks a lot better than what the MSFS UK update provides, but let's see if it's a technical issue that gets resolved at some point in the future. My feeling though is that it's due to a lower resolution of the arial photography, which can't be improved by much without another low-altitude pass over London.

I have my Rolling Cache disabled and even deleted the actual folder and that's how it stays with me. It still makes no difference to the melted buildings whether you started with a fresh new Cache or have it disabled.

@Tailwinds "when demand has died down a bit". I expect it is still high at the moment, so right now I wouldn't rule out a server load issue. Of course, it may well be that's just the quality the photogrammetry is, but there are conflicting reports about the quality with some saying it's fine.

With regards to the photogrammetry, I take comfort that it's not my meagre internet speed of 47Mbs that's causing the melted buildings because people have been replying to me on various forums that their Internet speeds are in the hundreds and even they get melted buildings so maybe it really is server side on Microsofts end causing the issues.

Hi Carl,

Yessir, Ant's freeware Tiggy and payware Pro. Both port fairly well. The freeware has some visible clickspot poly's where the Pro has not.

Eventhough just a port it looks pretty purty in MSFS ! 😎

Alas not going to happen, Carl. Nigel's masterpiece uses only 2D gauges which do not work in MSFS VC's. If you remember, Nigel's original FS9 Tutor was FSX converted by Ulrich. Hopefully he loves MSFS, then there's hope. 😎

I just asked at SOH Jan... it’s SUCH A WONDERFUL aircraft, I do hope it makes the transition. Fingers x’ed!

I don't know for me I was awe struck by how good it looked.  I mean obviously you can't look at it from 20 feet and have it be crisp but from 500-1000 feet, wow.  Do you know what kind a hit on performance all custom 3-D buildings with 4k textures would be.

Done some more flying around London tonight, can anyone confirm if they are seeing flickering textures and whole neighbourhoods devoid of 3D buildings particularly near the Tower of London, so only showing 2D maps??  I'm not sure if this is server side issues or something broke at my end.  I have a very strong internet connection with no issues in any other 3D cities so far.  I normally run the building setting at Medium, even bumping this up to Ultra makes no difference - very odd.

RESOLVED! I still had the thames water height fix in my mods from early days - removing this solved the problem
