Papua New Guinea in an old Ju 52

Recommended Posts

Junker planes were quite popular in the 1930s in PNG, so it was no wonder that in the 1950s, Australian WWII fighter ace and entrepreneur Bobby Gibbes decided to further develop his PNG forwarding business with three Ju 52, which he bought in Sweden. Why did he prefer the Ju 52 over the DC 3? The Junkers had the same and on occasion slightly higher load capacity and three instead of two engines, which gave Gibbes a higher safety margin. One of Gibbes pilots once remarked: "Those JUs were terrible things, heavy as a brick, but magnificent aircraft for the job. Imagine getting into the old Maprik strip, only 1,600 feet long, with a tri-motor carrying 7,500 pounds - as much as a DC 3. They were an extraordinary aircraft for their time. Qantas were stripping down their DC 3s to try to get a bit more payload out of them to compete with the Ju 52s."

This is the FS9 O. Fischer Ju, converted to native FSX standard (not by me). She flies now nicely in MSFS and almost all gauges work. Of course, being an FS9 plane, don’t expect top quality VCs. I’m just mighty happy to be able to fly this old friend of mine again.

We leave Goroka, Gibbes Sepik Airways home airport, for a flight to the Bunguwat airstrip.

That strip is definitely too small for us

Very cool. The DC-3 vs. Ju 52 discussion is almost like former FSX vs. FS9 debates 😅

Hopefully we will see a MSFS-native Ju-52 one day.

That would be really something!!

Fascinating reference to PNG Air History, Bernd...!

(PNG had played many significant roles in early aviation...e.g. when I had read about the 1969 London‐Sydney Air Race, if I recall correctly, the (handicap) winner BN2 was from PNG, which, unfortunately, later crashed in the (dangerous) Kokada Track of PNG...)...

Always good to see the Ju-52, here. Nice set and scenery...!!
