about to try v5

Recommended Posts

i just installed an I9-9900kf to an Asus Z390-Plus MB....It makes my 4.5 look pretty good, and I'm happy with it ...but

after seeing and hearing great things about vs 5.1....I'm beginning to get 2nd thoughts about upgrading.

My hanger now consists of small GA planes and assorted turbo-prop liners that I purchased because they were rated for P3dv4.

Now...if I dive into v5.1.....will I be able to take that hanger with me....or will it remain with v4.5...???

It depends.  Lots of P3Dv4 add-on aircraft are compatible with v5, but some aren't.

I've kept a parallel install of v4.5 for those.  The two versions coexist without much fuss.

I also kept both v4 and v5 for about six months but in the past couple of weeks I have completely removed v4.  Although I dearly miss the DC-6, I just couldn't use v4 due to it's inferior rendering system.  Most problems with using aircraft designed for v4 in v5 I believe are related to differences in how lighting and shading works.  If those do not become problems then it should be okay.

The vast majority of stuff can make the jump to the later version. Just the odd thing which is missed hasn't made it.

And a few things I decided to (re)purchase during my move to v5 (could have probably manually installed these, but I wanted the latest versions and ongoing updates):

Maddog X (15 euro upgrade fee for the official installer)

FSUIPC6 full version upgrade from FSUIPC5

ActiveSky P3D upgrade from AS16 P3D

Envshade (I owned PTA in v4)

FlyTampa Sydney V2 and Copenhagen V2 upgrades (I owned v1)

PacSim RKSI and KSLC upgrades

Most of my other addons either had free dual installers or I manually installed.

Edit: Never mind my question about your GPU.  I see from an earlier post you have a 1080Ti with 11GB memory which should be fine.

From my experience the majority of stuff that hasn't been ported to v5 is either fairly old aircraft where the devs aren't going to make back the cost of upgrading it, or current scenery where the changes to v5 broke something clever the devs did and they are not interested in fixing it as they are focussed on MSFS (for legitimate business reasons - doesn't make it any less frustrating though).

I can fly pretty much everything I flew in 4.5, where I flew it in 4.5, in v5. Some minor issues, but nothing that I couldn't fix. Albeit my hangar is smaller than many.

(I'm a 'copy the folders' guy for migrations, though, so I didn't encounter many installer problems as I didn't actually install much in v5, I moved it from 4.5. I know some products have installers that need hacking.)
