P3D v5 - how is VRAM handling now?

It would be my pleasure to help you. There’s a steep learning curve because the navigation and flight profile are so different to subsonic aircraft. But the virtual Flight Engineer will handle many of the operations until you feel comfortable doing them yourself. It was a 3 man crew after all so some help is required.

That flight was supersonic from just west of St Vincent and the Grenadines until 65nm off the coast of Texas so as not to lay the sonic boom over populated areas.

thanks bud  i will likely need that help.  that plane will always be special to me.  I remember being a kid and seeing it at JFK being totally mesmerized.

Back in ‘98 I was in the Delta lounge at JFK waiting for my flight when a huge noise made me jump up and I saw a BA Concorde departing 31L on the Canarsie departure. That is one challenging departure! 😁

I used to live near Dulles Airport (KIAD) and you could watch (and hear) the Concorde fly over on Sunday mornings. Loud and he was probably on downwind for the main runways. About as loud as an F35 which is deafening today. Glad they are based in PHX and not down here.

But infinitely more beautiful. 😉

The closest I got to Concorde was in the Airport Pub garden which backs on to Manchester airport around 150 yards from Rwy 23R. When the four RR engines spooled up with full reheat my chest cavity vibrated with the noise. It was wonderful! 😁 After it departed I turned to @Pete Dowson and just went “wow”. You couldn’t fail to be impressed. That was July 2000, 3 weeks before the Paris crash of an AF Concorde. 😢

So I'm quoting the above, but let me make my main point first, which has little to do with the above.

I have found two reasons for DEVICE_HUNG errors on my system.  One is, obviously, vram starvation.  I've totally eliminated that problem.  Sure, if I really want to, I can load up LatinVFR KMIA and the Leonardo MD-8x, crank the settings, and surpass my 11 gb vram.  But to do that, I have to push settings far, far higher than I normally would.

The second crash issue with my hardware was vsync.  And this may be pertinent to you as we both run the same BenQ monitor and 1080ti cards.  My 1080ti is an eVGA with a waterblock.  Anyway, in v4 I ran vsync on.  In v5, I haven't been able to do that reliably.  I think the real issue is TrueGlass.dll, but I haven't delved into it too much. 

P.S.  I almost forgot about the quote.  I have found that v5 performs better than v4, but even so, my 1080ti at 4K resolution cannot really handle SSAA with Dynamic Lighting.  Therefore, I run MSAA, usually.

Thanks @Mace. When I get v5.1 that will be one of the first things I'll test with a default setup. Did the entry in Event Viewer give you any clues? Did you report it to L-M?

Given the popularity of the 1080Ti and vSync with 30Hz you'd imagine lots of people would have the problem.

@Mace  Previously like many i suffered from the trueglass crashes.  The new file (trueglass.dll) out however completely remedied that problem a couple months ago it seems.

@MaceIf your trueglass.dll is older than 4 Jan 2021, you really need to update your Trueglass to the latest, which seems to have solved the issues with it and vsync.

As others have said, VRAM usage with P3D v5.1 can be effectively managed with prudently conservative settings.  A 1080Ti will need to be dialed back more than a 2080Ti, and a lot more than a 3080/3090, though, and that's due to two generations old throughput capacity limitations more than VRAM constraints.  I still run a 1080Ti in my portable simming rig, but at 1440p with GSync, and I have no complaints.  If I ever do go to 4K or ultrawide 1440p on that rig, I'll probably swap in the 2080Ti currently in my FPS/driving sim rig, which will give me a good bump in processing horsepower, but with the same 11GB of VRAM.

I had a similar experience at the 1978 Farnborough Air Show, Ray. Concorde did a touch and go, and I distinctly remember my whole body vibrating when those afterburners were switched on. I was only eleven years old at the time, and it was the closest I ever came to an operational Concorde. I really wish that one was still flying

@Christopher Low, my arithmetic tells me you were born the year I started work. How time flies! An aircraft the like of which we will never see again. There may be other supersonic aircraft but nothing to match Concorde’s looks.

It even won over the highly sceptical US press when the hangar doors were pulled back at a press event when we where trying to get permission to fly into JFK.

In my experience, with 11gb ram you have nothing to worry about.  I can generally fly tubeliners into complex addon airports with the sliders to the right and no vram issues.  I do not use EA.

I think with most issues of the sim, it's the vocal minority that makes issues seem larger than they are. V4 and V5 are not anywhere near the same. The settings pages while they might look the same aren't the same and users need to adjust them to suit.

One question I asked earlier which hasn’t been covered. Is there any big improvement in the default ground textures or is ORBX FTX Global still required?
