How do I remove the start-up sound?

Start-up sound for what?  Aircraft or the MSFS program itself?

If it is for the program, you could try making it lose focus by going out to the Windows desktop, by clicking alt-tab or alt-enter, or maybe even the Windows key (not tried that one but it may work).

I do this as I am downloading updates, otherwise the theme music drives me mad! 😆

Basically if MSFS is running in the background, it will lose focus and you won't hear the music.

I think you may need to select 'stop sounds on loss of focus' or something like that from the sound settings.

Please report back to let us know if it is what you need, and if it works.

Options>General>Sound>Volume Levels>Music. Set the slider to zero.

You can also have, as Bobcat said, sound to be off when focus is lost: Options>General>Sound>Mute Audio in Background>On.

There‘s better music in elevators. I wonder why they even call it music. Anyway, slider set to 0 and all fine
