11900K Official Announcement

Recommended Posts

The sim CPU we've been waiting for(?) has officially been announced. What we know:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/antonyleather/2021/03/16/intel-announces-11th-gen-core-i9-11900k-i7-11700k-and-i5-11600k-desktop-cpu-details-and-pricing/

  • "the Core i9-11900K, which will have a peak boost frequency of 5.3GHz and all-core frequency of 4.8GHz, will have a launch price of $539, which is around $60 more than the Core i9-10900K."
  • "the Core i9-11900K has eight cores and 16 threads, which is two fewer cores than the Core i9-10900K. The reason for this is that the Cypress Cove architecture used in the new CPUs is based upon the new Sunny Cove architecture used in its 11th Gen mobile 10nm CPUs, but scaling this up to more powerful desktop parts didn't quite work out."

https://www.cnet.com/news/intel-core-i9-11900k-leads-rollout-of-11th-gen-desktop-chips/

"As part of the 11th gen, these CPUs include Intel's latest Xe graphics architecture, here dubbed Intel UHD Graphics 750, the more efficient Cypress Cove cores that add Deep Learning Boost (AI acceleration), support for 20 PCIe 4 lanes (up to 44 PCIe lanes total) with Resizable BAR, the ability to use faster DDR4-3200 memory and more. While it doesn't generally add up to a huge performance increase for gaming over 10th gen -- Intel's own numbers show roughly less than 15% for 1080p play -- the video codecs and DL Boost do help a lot with photo- and video-editing".

- B&H says expected availability March 30th.

Intel claims that it is 14% faster than the 5900X at 1080P in their own studies in MSFS 2020. We'll see if that holds out in independent testing. I'm not convinced that going from 10th to 11th gen is really a major generational change.

I don't have a 10900K but I am wondering how the overclocked performance of the two will compare if two cores are turned off on the 10900K.

I'd rather have 10 cores at 5.2 than 8 cores at 5.3 in P3D--most of the rest of the stuff (integrated GPU, additional PCIe lanes etc) is irrelevant to simming.

14% faster doesn’t justify upgrade from 10900k to 11900k for me. Skipping the 11th gen.

That's good information to know.
