WF Scenery Studio Suspending Future Development Projects

Recommended Posts

To anyone who said piracy doesn't cost anything...

WF Scenery Studio suspending future development projects following the release of Shanghai Pudong International.

Quote

The last straw happened when “a member of [the WF Scenery Studio] group saw Pudong [available for] pre-sale on Xianyu.” This was not an authorised reseller and as a result, this member of the team decided to quit.
With the team unhappy with how rampant the piracy of their products has been, they have decided to stop the development of future airport products.

Sounds more like a case of employee theft than piracy.

Just as likely to be a beta tester.

Their ZSPD scenery is close to being finished.

Brought it. Another great airport made by WF Scenery. FPS are really good as well for such a large airport.

So why would anyone buy a product from a company that just declared that they are done?  Mind-boggling business strategy there...

They have some promises of continue updating this and previous product, and probably update compatible with MSFS. They just not going to make any new sceneries.

And, probably, currently this is the only option for Pudong.

I would be cautious by any company that is having internal issues and make promises they may not keep later on. Remember SunSkyJet who basically disappeared after everyone donated to the KDTW. He came out back in July on why he was out of touch and was moving forward only to be not heard from again. While I have purchased a few of WF scenery products I’m going to stick to major scenery developers. It’s a shame because their Hong Kong scenery is outstanding.

Of course piracy is a huge problem for ALL developers. Part of life for anyone creating intellectual property is dealing with it. No discussion about it.
Having said that, something tells me this may also be part of a very good tactics of hoping to get a lot of customers by telling them 'Look, we are leaving!'.
I guess sales will go up to 'save a developer from leaving' and they may miraculously change their mind. Which I wish to them, of course, as they seem to create really nice airports.
Flying in Europe almost exclusively, I won't be buying it. But I admit it definitely looks good, just like their other Asian sceneries, especially VHHH.

What makes some of you think that this is more a case of "employee theft" than "piracy"?

Statement from WFSS themselves on FB:

Hey Guys,

Shanghai Pudong International Airport (IATA PVG, ICAO ZSPD) is released.

In the past two days. We have received many messages asking if we quit. For this, we take this opportunity to give a reply. We did not quit. We will update some of the previous airports. As known. We decided to stop the development of new airports that have never been developed. And complained about piracy by the way. We didn't expect this to cause such a response. Thanks a lot for supporting us! We next will upgrade ZBAA,ZSSS etc...
Maybe MSFS after that.

I got their ZSPD and really like it. Performance is good for me, even with Samscene's Shanghai City in the background. Very nice overall!

Though, is it really necessary to second-guess the motives for their decision? It's disheartening to me that people feel the need to come up with ideas about some ulterior motives or hidden agenda. For one because it paints the developers as dishonest, and I don't think anybody here has a reason to assume that...?

The fact that a not yet released scenery showed up for sale on a Chinese piracy website says that someone on the Beta team had no problem stealing the scenery for their own gain.
