The Cattle Baron is open!

Congratulations on the opening of your Cattle Baron establishment. I do appreciate how carnivorous you Americans are and desperate to sink your teeth into animal flesh.

Luckily for me, living on an island that's done a remarkable job of keeping the dreaded pandemic away, I too will be sinking my teeth into a plate full of  comestibles tomorrow afternoon, from my favourite fancy restaurant that overlooks the ocean.  

And yes, there is a possibility that it was once a living animal. Although I admit, there is a part of me that struggles with this concept. Struggles with the concept of an animal lover that eats animals. 😕

Would I eat a dog or a cat?  No.  Or a deer or an elk?  No.  Because they are not grown for food and because I am an animal lover.  In fact I contribute monthly to the ASPCA.

Would I eat beef or pork or lamb?  You Betcha!  I love to sink my teeth into a juicy steak.

When I was young an able I was a fly fisherman.  I never kept or ate the fish I caught.  I always released them.  I figure a trout is too valuable a resource to only use once.  But farm raised trout in the supermarket or a restaurant is fair game for eating.

Having said all that for a good part of my life I was a hunter.  I had a shotgun and killed a lot of pheasant and quail and prairie chickens and ducks and geese for the table.  Never more than I could use.  I must say that for my taste pheasant is much more succulent and tender and delicate than chicken.

Homo Sapiens is an omnivorous species.  We are meant to eat both meat and wheat.  

By the way, you single out Americans as being carnivorous meat eaters.  Aren't Britains and Canadians and Frenchmen and Germans and Italians and Japanese and Chinese and Russians and Greeks and Spaniards as carnivorous as we Americans.  Or is something else going on here too?  Perhaps there are even meat eaters on your island too since world-wide meat eaters outnumber vegetarians about 95 to 1.

When in high school, during breaks would travel and eat at all you can eat dinners, sleep in the car, one meal a day. Nowadays kids are staying at $500 a night hotels on the beach during break.

We don’t eat the flesh, just the meat 😂😂

Actually it’s not really an American thing, I’ve witnessed quite a lot of meat eating going on in central and South America, Spain and Italy.

I’m actually an animal lover and have always had pets, just not the type that I enjoy eating. I actually am part of the other P.E.T.A 😂😂

That said, I actually don’t eat too much meat since I like to keep my cholesterol and fat intake in check. Although if it was as heathly as eating veggies daily, I wouldn’t mind eating a filet mignon daily 😋

It was tongue in cheek really, just being silly.

However, a quick Google reveals that the latest survey available has Australia and the US toping the tables for meat consumption per capita.

Affirmative! But CAN we live healthy lives without consuming meat? And if we can, should we? 

I should add, that processed meat is known to be dodgy for our health and quite a few studies have shown that unprocessed meat is too.

But of course Americans, Australians and Argentines eat more meat than anyone else in the world.  The answer is both economic and geographic.  All three countries have vast arid regions that don't get enough water for farming but are ideal for cattle and sheep grazing.  So it makes good sense to raise meat stock in those areas and make available an abundance of meat that goes into the diets of people in those countries.

Europe doesn't have the grazing land to raise large herds of cattle or sheep except maybe for Scotland and perhaps Ireland.

People in Europe eat horse meat.  Americans, including myself, wouldn't think of eating horse meat.

The best steak I ever had was at the Suhero (sp) Grill just off the Ginza in Tokyo.  Hand massage Kobe beef.

In Thailand the steaks I had in the restaurants just off base in Takhli weren't all that good.  I suspect it was because the steaks we were eating probably came from water buffalo.

Homo Sapiens evolved to eat meat.  Our teeth prove it.  And I doubt the few Americans who are vegans and vegetarians are going to change that.

I seldom buy beef off the counter at the super market.  I ring the bell for the butcher and have him cut a half dozen 8 ounce filets and a couple of 3 pound prime rib roasts for me.

Now excuse me while go to the freezer and pull out one of those filets for dinner tonight.  This thread has whet my appetite for a good steak.

I'm 87 years old and have been eating beef and pork and lamb all my life.  Just had sausages for breakfast and tomorrow I will have bacon with my eggs.  I love SPAM and sometimes chop it up into a stir fry or put it into macaroni and cheese or mix it up with scrambled eggs.  I have no cholesterol problem.  My annual blood tests show nothing out of the norm.  

A year or so ago my heart specialist had me undergo a chemical stress test.  He suspected I had some blockages in my arteries.  He scheduled me for an examination where he ran a scope up to my heart through my leg.  I forgot what he called it.  When he was done he told me it was a false alarm.  My arteries were clean.

Now not everyone is me.  I know some people should avoid or cut back on meat eating.  But when anti-meat evangelists start saying we should quit eating meat I feel a need to rebut.

A sample size of ONE. 🙂 Doesn't mean you can never eat meat, its just healthy to limit the frequency.

Its not just about our health, environmental impact is also a strong motivator to encourage people to consume less.

I labored all my life.  Went to war twice.  I raised 4 children.  I've paid my dues.  So I think I deserve to be comfortable and do what pleases me and eat what I want from now on.  I'm not going to make much of an impact on the environment in the few years I have left.  You youngsters worry about the environment.  As far as I'm concerned the world didn't exist before I got here and it will cease to exist when I leave.

My parent's and I were enroute to Tehran, Iran around 1961 and were making stops along the way. After leaving from the UK having visited London and Edinburgh, our next stop was Paris. On our second evening, we went to some fancy restaurant where my dad ordered a nice juicy medium rare steak. 

My dad complimented the chef to our waiter after dinner, "That was an excellent steak!" The waiter replied proudly:

"Mais bien sûr monsieur, notre chef n'achète que la meilleure viande de cheval!"

After finally grasping what the waiter had said, dad anxiously inquired where the men's room was. He quickly made his way there to become closely acquainted with the porcelain throne...

A family from the city were taking a Sunday drive in the country.

As they were passing field they saw a farmer being followed by a pig with a wooden leg.

Curious about a pig with a wooden leg they stopped to ask the farmer about it.

"Why does that pig have a wooden leg?"

"Why that's a valuable pig," said the farmer, "Our house caught fire one night and this pig, Elmer we call him, made such a commotion we all woke up and were able to escape the fire.  And you see that oil well down in the bottom land?  That pig was rooting up truffles and struck oil.  He made us rich."

The man of the family said, "Well that's very interesting, but it doesn't explain the wooden leg."

To which the farmer relied, "Boy, you city folk sure are dumb.  A valuable pig like that?  A pig that's part of the family now?  You don't eat a pig like that all at once."

I'm sure I saw, the other day, mention of canine teeth in terms of evidence we are omnivores. May have imagined it but interestingly, herbivores have canines too. Its actually the diversity of teeth and the enzymes in our digestive system that tell us we are omnivores. This is where vegans shoot themselves in the foot, when they try to reinvent biology. The nutty ones anyway.
