South Korea - Counterclockwise

South Korea – Counterclockwise

We fly around the Korean Peninsula and visit 10 destinations in South Korea.

25 million people, around half of the country's population of more than 51 million people, live in the Seoul Capital Area, the fifth-largest metropolitan area in the world.

After World War II, Korea was divided into two zones; a northern zone occupied by the Soviet Union and a southern zone occupied by the United States. After negotiations on reunification failed, the latter became the Republic of Korea in August 1948 while the former became North Korea.

In 1950, a North Korean invasion began the Korean War, which saw extensive U.S. intervention in support of the South. After the war's end in 1953, the country's economy began to soar, recording the fastest rise in average GDP per capita in the world between 1980 and 1990. The June Struggle led to the end of authoritarian rule in 1987 and the country is now considered among the most advanced democracies in Asia, with the highest level of press freedom. Its citizens enjoy one of the world's fastest Internet connection speeds and the densest high-speed railway network.

We depart from Incheon Int'l. Airport (RKSI). It is Korea's largest airport, serving the Seoul Metropolitan area. From there it is just a very short flight to Gimpo (RKSS), Seoul's second-largest airport. It was the cities main airport until Incheon was built.

Our next stop is Seosan Airbase (RKTP), about 50 miles south of Seoul.

Further south, we land at Gunsan Airbase (RKJK). Gunsan has emerged as a high-tech manufacturing industrial city and an international trade seaport.

Kunsan Air Base operated by the United States Air Force is in the city. To encourage investment, a free trade zone has been declared in the area.

The next landing is at Gwangju (RKJJ). is the sixth-largest city in South Korea. It is a designated metropolitan city. The airport will be closed when air traffic is established at the newer airport of Muan.

We fly another 100 miles south to land on the island of Jeju, at the airport with the same name (RKPC). The island covers an area of 1833.2 km², which is 1.83 percent of the total area of South Korea. In 2020, the resident registration population is about 670,000, the largest among the islands in South Korea.

The island lies in the Korea Strait and has an oval shape of 73 km east-west and 31 km north-south, with a gentle slope around Mt. Halla in the center. Its position in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea gives the island an important political and military position.

The island was "formed by the eruption of an underwater volcano approximately 2 million years ago." Jeju is a popular holiday destination and a sizable portion of the economy relies on tourism and economic activity from its civil/naval base.

We head back to the mainland and land at Yeosu (RKJY). The city of Yeosu consists of the Yeosu peninsula as well as 317 islands (49 inhabited, 268 uninhabited).

Thanks to the sea wind and warm current, Yeosu has cool summers and mild winters. Its ocean climate also brings Yeosu relatively longer springs and autumns than other regions. Yeosu is a city of history and loyalty where the headquarters of South Jeolla Province Navy Base was located, and the Great Admiral Yi Sun Shin improved upon the geobukseon (turtle ship) to save the country while serving as the commander of the navy.

Due to its appeal as an international ocean resort and tourist city, as well as its close proximity to the Yeocheon Industrial Complex, Yeosu has seen much development during the past several decades.

We continue east and land at Busan's airport Gimhea (RKPK). Busan is South Korea's second-most populous city after Seoul, with a population of approximately 3.4 million inhabitants. It is the economic, cultural, and educational center of southeastern South Korea, with its port—Korea's busiest and the sixth-busiest in the world. The surrounding "Southeast Economic Zone" (including Ulsan and South Gyeongsang) is South Korea's largest industrial area.

We head north and land Daegu (RKTN). It is the fourth-largest urban agglomeration in Korea after Seoul, Busan, and Incheon. Daegu and surrounding North Gyeongsang Province are often referred to as Daegu-Gyeongbuk, with a total population of over 5 million.

Daegu was an economic motor of Korea during the 1960s–1980s period and was especially known for its electronics industry. The humid subtropical climate of Daegu is ideal for producing high-quality apples, thus the nickname, "Apple City".

We continue north for our next stop at Yecheon airbase(RKTY). From here we have to fly another 87 miles north to reach our destination Yangyang (RKNY). It appears that the airport is under a long threat of being closed.

Dokumentation: Flight plans are here

Aircraft: The flight has 612 miles and 10 landings. It is suitable for any airplane cruising at about 300 knots. The CJ4, the MB339, the Goshawk are good choices. I will probably be in a CJ4 with a stock livery. Please fly what you like.

G91 for me. Note to self: Go easy on the gear and flaps. Oh, and don't forget to lock the canopy.
