This tree distance issue is disturbing...

Given the communication channels / feedback with Asobo, why can't they get this right? There is no error to reproduce...almost everyone sees / agrees that the view distance sucks now regardless of where it was at release, pre release, or any other point in the sims short history.

While there is much criticism as to the depth of MSFS avionics / fidelity etc...you would think that Asobo would make sure that the VFR aspects are solid (view distance etc) with consist performance.

Exactly. VFR is one of MSFS strong suits. It's where the sim shines.

And this tree distance thing is really hurting the experience. It's still possible to fly some places and almost not notice it (for example in rural farmland), but if you fly over Scandinavia or Canada or anywhere with deep forrests, it really is noticable.

You obviously are on a personal vendetta. If you can't see the importance of realism, facts, logic etc., then it's your fault, not mine.  Very strange behaviour to be honest and a little bit disturbing. I comment on facts and flight simming. You post on your strange personal feelings.

Alright Lads - that's enough of that.

I'm in Greenland and the trees are. . .well, are there any trees in Greenland?

I don't know - I thought it was just ice and downland but at Bluie West One there are a few but I don't think it's representational of the Sim.

(Somebody posted that the nearer to the Equator you go - the more LOD Trees you get. I'll be checking that out on my trip. but here's where I am for the night.

Canada tomorrow. . .

Well, I think in unmodded Iceland there are some unrealistic trees too. Bijan in his tree mod seems to take care of this. 🙂

It is not just they are not drawing far enough.

I believe it is rooted in a more fundamental flaw touching everything in the game and the LOD ring distance.

  • There is a bug in the LOD distance value and the way it is used in sim
  • There is a problem with objects appearing at slanted distance (45deg) but disappearing when at the same distance straight in front of you (aircraft gears for example with the rendering engine displaying LOD1 or LOD2 depending on the angle only).
  • The same slanted distance bug is also affecting lights at night (and furthermore, there is a discrepancy between left and right eye in VR with the light vector not rotated the same)
  • There is a problem with Trees disappearing then reappearing as the distance gets closer
  • There is a problem where different tree species are not appearing at the same distance
  • There is a problem where LOD ring distance is not taking in account COS(LAT) (i.e. the closer to the poles, the shorter the LOD)
  • etc...

These are all related to different LOD ring distance configuration and computation mismatches to me, and I've documented most of them here:

[08OCT2020] Trees draw distance is different per-species AND per-Trees LOD setting
[16OCT2020] Some trees are disappearing then reappearing

All anyone - everyone - wants, is; Drop this MOD in to your Community Folder and you'll have Trees to the horizon on LOD 100.

Or better still; a Hotfix that does that.

The SimUpdate IV is coming and no clue of amelioration. Asobo guys ruins this ability to display trees at long distance in one update and we don't know if they will come back with a solution until the end of year... or I should say before the Xbox version...

It's the single worst thing about the sim for me..  It turns what should be a breathtaking production for the rest into something from the early 2000s with all the popping and awful LOD.

Is there any chance of third parties looking into this?  I would gladly pay money to have my trees back in the distance.

This talk about them implementing a vegetation slider worries me.  What if the top setting is the rubbish we currently have?

The simupdate 5 Bring back trees at distance (7 miles) but not as originally planned 10 nautical miles 😞

Interesting, confirms the suspicion I had yesterday. For me personally, it's virtually the only fly in the ointment of an otherwise splendid update.
