Known Issues

  • Users may see some vertical ‘jittering’ when looking at distant clouds - This is more visible in VR and we are working to resolve it as a priority.
  • There are Anti-aliasing artefacts visible under some conditions when clouds are low on the horizon.
  • The lighting effects on the clouds, especially when the sun is low on the horizon is still very much a WIP, and will be improved.
  • Currently as part of the initial release, clouds do not affect LOS for the AI.
  • The legacy fog effects are not suitable for use with the new clouds - a new fog layer using the new technology will follow.
  • Thunderstorms and lightning effects will follow in future updates.
  • Using SLAM/AGM-65E alongside targeting pod can in some circumstances result in some ground units becoming semi-transparent to the targeting pod. This is currently a priority item to resolve.
  • We have greatly improved many of the visual effects, and some tuning of brightness still remains to be completed.
  • Night vision goggles do not provide sufficient illumination with no moonlight.
  • Dedicated server window can hang when minimised.
  • MP. Ping info missing (always zero) in player's list.

Artboard 1.png

23 April 2021

Dear Fighter Pilots, Partners and Friends,

The union flags have now returned to full height following the mourning period for his Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. Prince Philip trained as a pilot on the Chipmunk and progressed to the Harvard and Vampire. He was awarded his wings by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir William Dickson at a private ceremony at Buckingham Palace on 4 May 1953. He became a Marshal of the Royal Air Force and Commodore-in-Chief of the Air Training Corps. The Duke of Edinburgh was an experienced pilot and logged 5,986 hours on 59 types. In 1972 Prince Philip, even flew Concorde himself, he was a passionate and very competent airman indeed. Our thoughts are with Her Majesty the Queen and the whole family.

This week we would like to bring your attention to DCS: The Channel. An impressive list of updates has been released, including more than ten V1 launch sites and four new UK airfields. Buildings and structures of interest have also been added and we encourage you to check them out.

By popular demand and in order to ensure that users aren't tempted to enhance the performance of missiles in game, we have locked the LUA parameters.

Starting today and running to 26 April, a DCS Weekend Deal is running on Steam with up to 50% on most modules.

We hope that 2.7 has been a successful update for you and would like to thank you all for your bug reports and solidarity in improving DCS World.

Thank you for your passion and support.

Yours sincerely,

Eagle Dynamics Team

As our online community grows and grows, we recognise that ensuring a level playing field for all has become an important matter and therefore, on popular demand we have locked the LUA files relating to weapon systems.

East Church

RAF Eastchurch remained active between the wars and was home to No. 266 Squadron during the Battle of Britain. During the Second World War, Eastchurch was part of Coastal Command, a fighter and bomber outfit that protected Allied troops and supply chains from the U-boats and the Luftwaffe. By 1943, Coastal Command finally received sufficient long range B-24 Liberators, equipped with enough Wandering Annies to prove extremely effective.

The Command saw action from the first day of hostilities until the last day of the Second World War. It completed one million flying hours, 240,000 operations and destroyed 212 U-boats.

Hero3.png

Biggin Hill

Between the wars, the airfield was used by a number of experimental units, working on instrument design, ground-based anti-aircraft defences, and night flying. The base was closed between 1929 and 1932 whilst renovations and the construction of two new hangars took place.

Hero4.png

Headcorn

On the 6th of August 1943, 127 Wing Royal Canadian Air Force moved in 403 and 421 Squadrons equipped with Spitfires under the command of ‘Johnnie’ Johnson, the highest scoring wartime allied Ace in European theatre.

On the 17th of April, 1944. The airfield was handed over to the 354th Fighter Group comprising the 353rd, 355th and 356th Fighter Squadrons who operated the North American P-51D Mustangs. There were 3000 ground crew supporting 70 aircraft.

Today, as a private civil airfield and parachute centre, it also houses the Lashenden Air Cadets of 500 Squadron and Thurston Helicopters, a helicopter flying-school company.

Hero5.png

High Halden

RAF High Halden was a Royal Air Force base in Kent. Opened in 1944, it was a prototype for temporary Advanced Landing Ground airfields, which were required for the rapid growth of air operations to support the growing activities as Allied forces progressed east towards Berlin.

We have been working on the airfield and the mixture of agricultural field textures, as well as finer details around the bunkers and recognisable remains.

LAZ-695 and Liaz 677 civilian buses

The LiAZ-677 is a Soviet and Russian city high-floor bus, the first prototype released in 1963. Mass-produced from 1967 to 1994, assembly lasted until 2002. These were some of the most popular city shuttle buses in the USSR.

Hero7.png

SA-6 Gainful (NATO) 2K12 Kub

The 2K12 Kub-M1 Surface to Air Missile system was initially developed for the Soviet Army Air Defence to supplement the larger and longer ranging SA-4 Ganef. The M1 variant was initially deployed in 1973. The SA-6 is a highly mobile system, and is able to quickly switch firing positions.

Hero8.png

The 1S91 Search and Track radar system comprises a tracked chassis with a centrally mounted turret, featuring two independently rotating sections, the lower of which mounting the acquisition radar, and the upper tracking and CW illuminator radar. This allowed the system to search for targets with the acquisition radar, and then perform tracking and illumination with the second radar. This provided much greater flexibility compared to the SA-4 Ganef.

The combat debut of the SA-6 / 2K12 was during the Yom Kippur war of 1973. The superior low altitude performance of the weapon, and the CW semi-active missile seeker resulted in a much higher success rate compared to the earlier S-75 / SA-2 Guideline and S-125 / SA-3 Goa systems.

The SA-6 has seen use in a variety of conflicts, including the 1982 Israeli invasion of Southern Lebanon. Desert Storm and the subsequent Northern/Southern Watch operations, and the 1999 Allied Force campaign.

Hero9.png

BTR-80 APC

The BTR-80 is a wheeled amphibious combat vehicle designed to carry infantry and marines to the battlefield, it provides supporting fire from inside the vehicle. The BTR-80 mounts a turreted 14.5-mm KPVT machine gun and a coaxial 7.62-mm PKT machine gun.

All of the features that we have highlighted in this week's letter are now available for you to use in DCS World 2.7 Open Beta. We are working diligently to fix existing bugs and will be providing an update in the nearest future.

Thanks again to you and all the community for your passion and support,

30 April 2021

Dear Fighter Pilots, Partners and Friends,

DCS World 2.7 Open Beta is now running at full power and feedback is coming in fast from the community. Thank you all for helping us with bug reports and suggestions, it is highly appreciated. We are currently also working to improve clouds, water and wave issues and enhance certain terrain features before moving 2.7 to Stable.

When DCS: Mi-24P Hind delivers to Early Access with v1.0 of the ‘Petrovich’ AI, you will notice that it is designed as a human assist tool which requests specific sets of instructions via the onboard AI, whether from pilot to co-pilot or vice-versa. Please see below for more information.

We are also pleased to update you on the progress to Black Shark 3, including the revised cockpit, new external model, new avionics and weapons. This new version of the highly successful Ka-50 simulation should be available this summer and will be offered to existing owners of Black Shark II with a substantial discount.

For those of you who haven’t had a chance to check out the Spring Sale 2021, please be aware that it will finish on the 2nd of May. Hurry over to our Eshop and take a look and the important discounts available.

Thank you again for your passion and support.

Yours sincerely,

Eagle Dynamics Team

HIND Multicrew

EN_Hero_1.png

Petrovich Al's overall philosophy is based on the 'Functionality First' principle. The flight commands interface for Pilot-Operator to Pilot-Commander will be via a virtual HSI offering specific commands and sub-modes. This interface is controllable simply by use of the 4-way hat or 4 buttons (for keyboard ops) in addition to the use of the modern HOTAS practices of long and short presses.

We also aim to use the Pilot-Commander's line of sight for target spotting and designation functions with transmission to the Pilot-Operator for further target recognition and engagement. A 'human' delay in response times is simulated and is measured from tester multi-crew interaction data and military practice guidelines for target spotting, identification and selection as well as the correct 'click to weapon activation' cycle times of the real platform.

In addition, we are planning to prepare a special mode for Multiplayer slots, where Petrovich can be assigned limited abilities. These can be toggled per slot and chosen by the mission designer at will. As for the Al voices, we are planning to use two different Russian voices for each seat in the helicopter. Both gentlemen are former operational military pilots and will deliver English and Russian versions. More details will be made available in future Newsletters.

Black Shark 3

Development Progress

EN_Hero_2.png

We are progressing well with the development of DCS: Black Shark 3 which will give the well-known Ka-50 attack helicopter a brand new external 3D model, enhanced cockpit and new features that expand gameplay, these include.

Helicopter missile warning system (MWS) implementation

Air-to-Air Igla missile implementation

The sensors of the MWS will be integrated into the onboard defense system with the ability to display detected missile threats on the ABRIS.

Igla missiles are similar to those used in MANPADS and can hit subsonic aircraft at ranges up to 6 km. To cater for these new missiles, two new pylons are added to the wingtips bringing the total number of hardpoints to six. These missiles are operated in a similar mode to the Boresight mode which is used on many Russian aircraft. Once power to the missile is on and the seeker axis directed to the target, the seeker can lock on to its heat signature. As the target enters the launch envelope of the weapon, the pilot can be ‘fire and forget’.

Existing owners of the Blackshark 2 are free to continue flying the legacy Ka-50 or to upgrade to the new Blackshark 3 for a very reasonable price. Newcomers will be able to buy the full retail version as usual.

Mariana Islands

The Pacific Supermarket

Hero2.png

We are continuing to work on Air Traffic Control (ATC) for the new Mariana Islands airfields that will later take advantage of the new ATC system currently in development.

Internal testing of this map is going well, and we are working to further improve the ground textures and address road network anomalies. Work on improving the ports and shorelines also continues. Our goal is to create the best looking DCS map yet by using our latest terrain development kit tools.

Hero3.png

US Naval Base, Guam

The US naval base on Guam holds a massive amount of post-war resources and war material. In the late 1940s, the Seabees construction brigade extensively developed the land and it became the primary docking and storage facility for the Guam-based US Navy fleet. It remained under construction for the next 25 years.

Hero4.png

Ordnance Annex

The Naval Magazine for the US Naval base is situated in the south-central section of the island. It occupies 8,800 acres, and it includes an entirely man-made reservoir. It is also the central heating and water distribution plant for the US Naval base.

Hero5.png

Northwest Field

Northwest Field became a fighter base in October 1946, and it was home to the reactivated “Flying Tigers” fighter squadron. Equipped with P-47 Thunderbolts, it was assigned the responsibility of defending the Mariana Islands. Weapon stores and bunkers were built between Northwest Field and North Field. These facilities were used to support the long range and intense strategic bombing campaign against the Japanese.

Hero7.png

Andersen Air Force Base AAFB

On the 7th of October 1949, North Field was renamed after Brigadier General James Roy Andersen, and it remains one of the largest and most important US air bases in the Pacific. It had a direct supply line from the United States and was considered ideal for B-52 Stratofortress operations. Andersen AFB now supports operations in the Indo-Pacific theater.

P-47D

Thunderbolt

Hero7.png

During 1944, the 318th was equipped with Republic P-47D Thunderbolts for the Marianas campaign. Working closely with Marine Corps ground forces, the ‘Bolts pioneered close air support and were the first to use napalm. P-47 pilots frequently carried two 500 lb bombs and used skip-bombing against railroad tunnels to destroy hidden enemy trains and stores.

We hope this broad insight into Guam will be interesting to you and we look towards sharing more information on the WWII version of DCS: Mariana Islands in the near future.

Thank you again for you passion and support,

Your sincerely,

Saipan

Introduction

Hero1.png

Saipan

Saipan is the current capital of the United States Commonwealth islands and it was part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The island continues to be of strategic importance and is heavily supported by the United States military.

Hero2.png

Saipan International Airport

In June, 1944, the Seabees of the 3rd Battalion 20th Marines repaired and expanded the airfield to become the Naval Advance Base Saipan, and it supported the first P-47s of the 19th Fighter Squadron. It covers an area of 734 acres and boasts two paved runways. The main runway currently measures 8,700 x 200 ft, and the second is 7001 x 100 ft. This airfield was the primary launch site for B-29 Superfortress missions that led to the massive destruction of Japanese industrial targets.

Hero3.png

Port of Puerto Rico on Saipan

The Port encompasses 2,600 linear feet of berthing space and a 22-acre container yard. It has water and underground fuel lines protected by concrete vaults as well as a sewage removal system. Dockside lights run the length of the quay for night time operations.

The channel, turning basin, and berthing areas have been widened and deepened to a uniform -40 feet in order to comfortably welcome medium- to deep-draft vessels. Two fuel storage facilities are also present at Saipan seaport to manage re-fuelling.  Future improvements are the paving of the access road leading to the main port, upgrading of the security communication system, and water rescue equipment.

Finally, improved navigational aids and repositioned harbor buoys mark the safest route into port with assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard.

Hero4.png

Urban areas of the West coast

The western side of the island is lined with sandy beaches and an offshore coral reef that creates a large lagoon. Saipan's flora is predominantly limestone forest. All shoreline and cliff textures, as well as the seabed and beaches, are being hand drawn for optimum accuracy. The buildings, houses, and large number of ground assets are all new additions to DCS World.

Hero5.png

Lao Lao bay Golf and Resort

Since the 1970s, tourists from the United States and Japan have been traveling to the island to enjoy the natural beauty and other attractions. The tourist resorts have been recreated in detail, and they comprise special ground textures for the golf course. The eastern shore is composed primarily of rugged, rocky cliffs and a narrow underwater bank leading to the Marpi Reef, which lies 28 miles to the north.

Hero6.png

Farallon de Medinilla

Situated about 45 nautical miles north of Saipan is the Farallon de Medinilla island. For years, the U.S.Navy has used it for military weapon testing and bombing exercises. Farallon de Medinilla has a length of 1.7 miles, a width of 490 ft in the south, expanding to 1,740 ft in the north, with an area of 0.326 square miles. At its narrowest, the island is only 66 ft wide.

The shore is dotted with cliffs containing caves, and its table top surface has some shrubbery and savanna grass. The island also has three X-shaped figures and one Y-shaped figure that are built out of metal shipping containers. These arrangements have been left by the U.S. Navy for bomb targeting practice.

Mi-24P Hind

Development Progress

Hero7.png

Introduction

In a previous update to DCS: Mi-24P Hind, we shared a preview of the Petrovich AI interface.

The first video in the DCS: Mi-24P Hind series of tutorials is now available. We encourage you to take a look at DCS: Mi-24P HIND | Introduction for an overview of this beast.

Hero8.png

Quick Start

Once you have learnt the basics, it is time to learn a simplified start up. Check out the DCS: Mi-24P Hind Quick Start guide to help you hit the ground running.

Hero9.png

Petrovich

We have finished work on the hover flight mode for the Petrovich command and lateral and vertical movements using this system. The latency in command reception by Petrovich is in progress, and it will mimic the real life crew  lag when communicating and processing information. In the next update, we will share details on Petrovich flight modes and how to use it in combat.

Hero10.png

SPO-10 RWR

The SPO-10 Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) now recognizes radar emitters, and it provides visual and audible feedback. Currently, we are tuning this system, and we aim for it to be available at Early Access launch.

Hero11.png

ASP-17 Sight

The ASP-17 weapons aiming sight is operational. It will be possible to manually adjust it and use its Continuously Computed Impact Point (CCIP) function. This is a highly accurate system when used over level terrain, and it is similar to the Su-25A’s weapons sight.

Ground Units

New Models

Hero12.png

T-155 Firtina

This is a Turkish-produced, self propelled howitzer that is based on the ROK K9 Thunder. It entered Turkish service in 2004. Armed with a 155mm L/52 gun, the T-155 is capable of attacking targets up to 40km away, and it is able to quickly move firing position using its 66km/h maximum speed / 480km range. The T-155 has been involved in various Turkish operations along its border with Iraq and Syria, and it remains in active service with the Turkish Army today.

Hero13.png

VAB Mephisto

A development of the successful French VAB APC, it was first produced by Renault in 1979 with over 5000 delivered. A retractable turret containing four ready to launch HOT-2 missiles with 8 reloads gives the VAB a lethal anti-tank capability out to 4000m. The VAB is fully amphibious, and its propulsors can be seen on the rear sides of the hull. This, along with its rugged and proven 4x4 drivetrain, gives the VAB fantastic off road capabilities. The VAB Mephisto has seen service with many countries, and in 2018, the Lebanese Army took delivery of 10 Mephisto’s from France.

Hero14.png

PT-76

First produced in 1951, the PT-76 is a Soviet light tank that became the primary reconnaissance tank of the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact countries with over 12,000 produced. Armed with a 76.2mm rifled main gun, with an effective range of 1,500m, the PT-76 is heavily armed for a vehicle of its size. With a primary reconnaissance role, amphibious capability was essential; and, its water-jet propulsion was innovative for the time it was designed. The PT-76 has seen service in a variety of theatres, including the Vietnam war, the Six-Day War, the Angolan Civil War, and the Balkans Wars. The PT-76 is notable for being the first combat victim of the BGM-71 TOW missile, fired by an experimental UH-1B near the Vietnamese city of Kontum in 1972.

Hero15.png

Leopard 2A4 and 2A4TRS

Produced between 1985 and 1992, the Leopard 2A4 is the most widespread version of the Leopard 2 line. Earlier German Leopard 2s were upgraded to 2A4 standard. The 2A4 was the first major upgrade to the Leopard 2 line, bringing an all new digital fire control system that was able to employ more varied ammunition types, an automated fire and explosion suppression system, and an improved turret with titanium/tungsten armour. The Leopard 2A4 was the last variant to have flat, frontal armour on the turret; subsequent variants would have wedge-shaped, spaced, frontal armour.

Turkey is a major operator of the Leopard 2 line, and it has upgraded many of them to the Leopard 2 A4TRS standard. This incorporates additional armour, upgraded optics, and a new fire control system.  Turkey’s Leopard 2’s have seen significant combat along the border with Syria, with the older Leopard 2A4’s flat, frontal armour turrets proving vulnerable to Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM) fire.

DCS: AH-64D

Development Report

Hero1.png

The external model and cockpit are extraordinarily complex and time consuming. An enormous amount of research and work have gone into making these as detailed and accurate as possible. Special attention has been given to the pilot crew models and animations.

Hero2.png

Much of the avionics work focuses on the navigation system and TSD pages. This is in parallel with the IHADSS / PNVS / TADS, the Area Weapons System / Rocket Management Subsystem, Longbow Hellfire Modular Missile System with the AGM-114K.

Hero3.png

The Aircraft Survivability Equipment (ASE) is also in development. This incorporated the Radar Signal Detecting Set and the Common Missile Warning System (CMWS). These will be available at launch and greatly increase mission survivability.

Hero4.png

The flight model is progressing nicely, and we are now developing the flight augmentation systems that include SCAS and HOLD modes. Modeling of the T700 GE 701D EDECU engine and related systems is underway.

Thank you again for your passion and support,

Your sincerely,

Dear Fighter Pilots, Partners and Friends,:pilotfly:

It is with great pleasure that we announce 2.7 has moved to DCS World Stable. We would like to thank you for your continued support and detailed bug reports.

Today, we are also introducing a new Free to Play program that lets you evaluate all of our modules (aircraft and maps) for 14 days. You can play each module sequentially for 14 days or any number of them at a time. Once you have ‘consumed’ the 14 days, you will be given another 14 day free trial period for all modules six months later. Enjoy the offer and please tell your friends! Check out the video here.

DCS: F-16C Viper has been receiving some important attention. Recently, the GBU-31 and GBU-38 JDAM bombs have been added, and they are currently in internal testing. We are working at full power to iron out existing Air-to-Air Radar and Navigation System bugs, and these fixes should be released soon to an Open Beta.

In April, we conducted preliminary CFD research of R-27 missiles family aerodynamics. The focus of this research was zero-lift drag correction and missile ballistic refinement. Please read our R-27 Missile Family Report.

Thank you for your passion and support.

Yours sincerely,

Eagle Dynamics Team

DCS F-14 Tomcat by Heatblur Simulations

  • NEW: Hook Physics
    • Added physics based hook model.
    • Hook will skip now if landing too fast.
    • Hook will shear off when arresting with excess kinetic energy.
    • Hook no longer clips through ground. (Spectators and RIO may notice some clipping due to network lag.)
    • Added collision shell to hook.
    • Hook can now be damaged by gunfire or explosions and detach from the aircraft.
    • Added spark effects and hook break sounds.
  • NEW: Iceman Features
    • Iceman can now orbit a steerpoint or map marker.
      • You can select between a variety of speeds and diameters
      • You can ask Iceman to fly a left or right handed orbit
      • You can smoothly transition between orbit diameters and speeds at any time
    • Iceman can now fly to a steerpoint or map marker.
  • NEW: Carrier Burble Aerodynamics
    • Carriers will now create a burble behind the stern.
    • Burble intensity differs with carrier and wind speeds and needs to be taken into account when landing on the carrier.
    • When in close, the burble will first generate positive vertical velocity, immediately followed by negative vertical velocity.
  • NEW: At night, the catapult launch is triggered by turning the exterior lights on (in accordance with manual procedures). Added a new special option which flashes the lights automatically together with the pilot salute.
  • NEW: Added MAK-79 bomb clamp models and revised loadout code. Bombs will now no longer float around the aircraft pylons.
  • NEW: Added 15 Mariana Islands Quickstart missions.
  • JESTER reporting improvements: JESTER is now more selective in reporting incoming missiles, and he will ignore the missiles that don’t look like potential threats.
  • Completely rebuilt turn and slip ball indicator physics.
  • Overhauled several aspects of Autopilot behaviour:
    • ALT Hold will now null the rate instead of returning to a set altitude.
    • ALT Hold will now engage only if within +/- 200FPM vertical speed.
    • ALT Hold will not disengage anymore with lateral stick input, but with approx. 10lbs longitudinal pressure (or its equivalent in vertical velocity).
    • HDG Hold will not disengage anymore with lateral stick input. Lateral stick input can now be used for steering in HDG Hold and will set the new heading upon release and leveling.
    • With HDG Hold engaged and if lateral stick input is released within 5° bank angle the AP will level the aircraft now.
    • Fixed ATT and ALT Hold not engaging properly at higher altitudes.
    • The aircraft will roll smoother now if lateral stick input is used during ATT, ALT and HDG Hold.
    • If the aircraft is overbanked or overpitched during ALT and/or ATT Hold, ATT Hold should now return the aircraft to 30° pitch and 60° bank.
  • Taught JESTER the importance of breathing: he will turn on his oxygen on startup now.
  • Asking JESTER to input waypoints will no longer break the INS alignment procedure. The option to input the waypoints is disabled during times when it could impact the alignment.
  • Fixed Wing Sweep multi-crew initialization issue. This should solve F-14’s causing collision damage on carriers if spawned in the wrong order due to unswept wings.
  • Fixed slip-ball negative G-load erratic behavior.
  • Fixed radio catapult salute. It now triggers launch.
  • RIO can now use radio catapult salute to trigger a launch, too.
  • Fixed guard receiver in both radios. Guard frequency is now audible and automatically sets guard frequency according to your last selected frequency in the AN/ARC-182: 40.5 FM for 30 - 88 FM, 121.5 AM for 108 - 156 AM, 156.8 FM for 156 - 174 FM and 243 for ranges set between 225 and 400 AM/FM (and will always be 243 AM for the AN/ARC-159).
