High VAS load

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I KNOW...we had this propably a thousand times already. But it really frustates me. I've been flying FSX/FS9 for almost 15 years now and I experienced a million different ways to make the Flight simulator crash (Blue Screen, OOM, CTD etc.). Last year at this time I even was so frustated I quit playing Flight Simulator and sweared to myself to wait until the new MSFS will be released. That's what I did. For that I even bought myself a new PC, because it just wouldn't be possible to play on my old one.

Graphics -> WOW! Amazing! How do they do that? 😵

Performance -> WOW! Amazing! I cannot complain at all (40+ FPS on highest display settings)

VFR flying -> WOW! Amazing! So nice 😃

IFR flying -> WHAT THE HELL? Even with purchasing the Premium Deluxe Ultimate Super Duper Version..WHAT THE HECK! I'm gonna wait till PMDG or QW realeases their aircraft for this flight sim!

So I decided going back to good old FSX for finally flying some nice IFR legs again. What could possibly go wrong with my new PC specs? 🤪

Now the problem itself: Starting a flight on PMDG 777-200LR at EDDF (Mega Airport Frankfurt V2), activating AS Next Gen for FSX:SE and having GSX installed according to ProcessExplorer my VAS is already load up to 3.5-3.7GB (so like 92%) --> Are You kidding me?

Is that normal? Even if I start a Trike flight on a non scenery airport without having AS Next activated the VAS is loaded by 2.4GB

Can someone please explain? To be honest..I expected a lot more! My FSX even closed down with a OOM after reaching the gate now 2 times already.

I'm definetly not a PC specialist and almost have no Idea about Hardware stuff. But this? Seriously?

My PC  specs:

Processor: Intel i7-10700KF

RAM: 64GB

GPU: ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 3090 Trinity

Win10 Pro

FSX:SE is installed on Drive D\ -> SSD 1TB

FSUIPC 4.976

The LON thingy in FSX.cfg is still unchanged at 4.5000

Would I have the same problems with P3D (I just thought about changing SIM if it helps)

Hi,

What you are describing is not really a surprise! I calculated that on my set up, FSX with almost no scenery active had a VAS footprint of around 1.8GB. If you load the PMDG 777, which has a heavy VAS footprint (about 900MB more than the default FSX Baron) and start a flight at Mega Airport Frankfurt (which also has a very heavy resource demand) then you will be close to the 4GB VAS limitation. Unfortunately this limitation remains the same no matter how powerful your PC specs are and it is one of the drawbacks of 32-bit platforms such as FSX.

There are a few things you could try to try to reduce the risk of an OOM - perhaps try reducing some of the sliders in the scenery settings such as LOD radius, mesh complexity and mesh and texture resolution and perhaps also reduce the cloud draw distance a little. You haven't shown an image of your traffic settings, but AI traffic is a big user of VAS so I would minimise AI air traffic and consider setting AI land and sea traffic to zero.

If you don't already use a scenery configurator, I would recommend trying one so that FSX only loads the scenery you are planning to use for that flight rather than loading every item of scenery you have installed. For me this can save around 500-600MB of VAS usage as I have a lot of addon scenery. There are freeware scenery configurators available if you wanted to try these but I use the payware Aerosoft SimStarterNG utility. In addition to creating scenery cfg sets this also allow the creation of separate FSX cfgs which I have done to take into account the potential VAS usage, etc.

Even if you do all these things however, the combination of Mega EDDF and the PMDG 777 is going to be pushing FSX to its limits although you might just manage to depart from the airport without an OOM if you turn down some of the display sliders. Just make sure that you destination airport has a very low VAS demand!!

No because P3Dv4 and P3Dv5 are 64-bit programs that are not limited by the same memory limitations as a 32-bit program such as FSX.  For me, having to monitor VAS was the reason I switched to P3Dv4.  I'm now in P3Dv5 which has a similar issue with memory, this time with graphic memory, but I'm betting your GPU has enough.  I'm only on a 1080ti with 11MB and never seen any utilization more than 5.5.

Hey guys,

sorry for not replying in a while.

Thank you so much for your answers! Really appreciate it. It is simply frustating 😄

Thinking about changing SIM to P3D now 🙂

Just remember if you do, you're going to have to repurchase any aircraft and scenery and I'm not sure if PMDG offers a FSX to P3D upgrade pricing..

Unfortunately, the author decided to pull the FSX version of SIMstarter NG from the marketplace, so it is no longer available. Sad because it's a great tool.

What a shame!
