High angle of attack on approach....

Recommended Posts

Guest PhilT

Hi,When on an approach to land, at any airport in a 737, I can never see the runway... My aircraft approaches at a really high angle of attack when in an ILS APP mode.... and when i fly the approach manually i have to hold the same angle to make the runway.... I approach with a relatively low weight (30%-40% fuel in tanks) medium flap settings, low speed (135-140knots)..... I can post pics if that helps...any help is great, cheers, phil

Hi Phil,Since I'm not certian what your definition is of "medium flap settings" I'll throw this out for starters. If your approach speed is 135-140 knots you should be at flaps 30 for normal landing or 40 for a shorter runway. Try it and see if it helps. Usually the aircraft will pitch up when trying to maintain a certain altitude but it doesn't have adequate airspeed. It's attempting to get more lift through angle of attack. As such, you might want to try a faster Vref (landing) speed. At a light weight I usually target mine for 150 knots and close the throttles as I fly over the numbers.Happy landings. John

Phil,I just CTRL Q, to look over, and then on landing Shift+Space to snap back up to normal view.A321 is the same.
