MSFS bug? Only one livery per model at a time

Recommended Posts

I'm increasingly convinced that the current version of MSFS is somehow interpreting PSX traffic to limit each model type (e.g. 77L, 77W, A320 CFM, etc.) to a single livery, regardless of whether the appropriate liveries are available. Here's what I recently ended up with at WSS, showing the data PSX was providing (as visible in Little Navmap) on the left and whether it showed a correct livery. Now for some of these (in italics) it's WAD because no livery was available. But for others, which I've marked with an asterisk and bolded, the appropriate livery was installed and available, but it still showed the wrong livery -- notably, one already being shown (correctly) for other injected traffic:

TGW A320 -- correct, Scoot
HVN A321 -- correct, Vietnam
SIA 77W -- correct, Singapore
*UAE 77W -- incorrect, Singapore (livery available)
*QTR 77W -- incorrect, Singapore (livery available)

CES A320 -- correct, China Eastern
UAE 77L -- correct, UAE
*AIC 788 -- incorrect, Scoot (livery available)
IGO A320 -- correct, Indigo
*CKK 77L -- incorrect, UAE (livery available)
*EVA 77W -- incorrect, Singapore (livery available)

SIA 744 -- correct, Singapore
SIA A359 -- incorrect, Lufthansa (no livery available)
SIA B738 -- incorrect, Kulula (no livery available)

You'll notice the only model that shows up repeatedly with different liveries is the A320. I can't check that in LNM, but my strong suspicion is that these are actually distinct models (e.g. winglets or not, CFM vs. IAE etc.).

Has anyone else observed this? I've flown out of WSSS a bunch lately, and in hindsight this explains why I seem to always get a bunch of Singapore 777s or a bunch of EVA 777s -- but never both.

Hi James.

It is not very likely that you are right because the matching algorithm is 5 years old already.

Please run a session with Logging of live matching checked, and post the Log.txt here. Also post your AI_liveries.xml. Than we can discuss your findings based on the facts.

Nico, thanks, I will.

To be clear, it seems from what I can see that the PSX matching is working perfectly, just that MSFS is perhaps then somehow "simplifying" the liveries actually displayed in the sim in the next step. For example, I'm not getting a "missed liveries" note for the liveries that aren't showing up -- I think because as far as PSX can tell they're not "missed." But for some reason they're still not showing up in MSFS.

I just ran WSSS at the same time after restarting the sim (the parked statics are close to identical from the list I posted) and now instead of Singapore 77Ws everywhere, it's BAW 77Ws everwhere, even though I can see in LNM that only one of them is "supposed to be" BAW.

Anyway, I'll be back with a log.txt and AI_liveries.xml.

James

And finally a couple of pictures of what I'm talking about in MSFS:

tH0KVn8.gif

Note that it should be an AIC 788 and three 77Ws: BAW, UAE, and SIA. All of these liveries are installed (as you can see from my AI_liveries.xml).

What shows up is a Scoot (TGW) 788 and three SIA 77Ws.

These are all static ai aircraft (indicated by a trailing underscore). Could you also switch on Logging of static matching and post again.

Sorry, of course I should have mentioned these are static aircraft. Here it is (this time those same three 77Ws all showed up as UAE, for what it's worth).

To be clear, it seems from what I can see that the PSX matching is working perfectly, just that MSFS is perhaps then somehow "simplifying" the liveries actually displayed in the sim in the next step.

We notice the same behavior in MSFS Multiplayer.. multiple liveries flown, all liveries get reduced to the same livery for all.   The displayed livery can change during the flight, but then all change at the same time.

 15:21:26 Flight not running

There is an interrupt? What is going on there?

Why do you quit MSFS so soon, could not you let MSFS run a little longer?

Also check your MSFS settings, they should be exactly as indicated in my PSXT_MSFS document.

Nico, your questions about interrupts etc. seem to have simply been because I was closing MSFS first, then PSXT after. Sorry about that confusion! This time I closed PSXT first and you'll see there's none of that stuff in the log, below.

I checked and all settings match your MSFS readme. I had "use generic AI liveries" set to on and turned it off just in case. No change (as below).

First, two shots showing where there's evidently a mismatch between the simconnect data (as shown in LNM) and what's actually shown as the livery (the log also shows these as correctly matched):

And the log. As expected, all the matching appears to have worked, live and static alike. But again, a given model seems to just stick to the first livery loaded in the sim:

Well it is quite simple, take for instance the matching of CAL13_

CAL13_    CAL B744 =3= B744CAL

What PSXT_MSFS does, after the matching,  is to call a SimConnect function that creates an aircraft in MSFS, and as argument it passes the title of the livery, in this case "B744CAL". What happens after that is out of the hands of PSXT_MSFS.

Normally it goes as expected,  -I have not noticed problems in my Sim -, but if in your Sim not the right livery appears then there either is an error in the SimConnect server of your Sim (unlikely), or there is an error in the aircraft.cfg file or the [fltsim.x] section in that aircrfat.cfg file that defines the livery (the latter can be checked with a program such as Ai-Aircraft Editor), or ??.

You better ask further in a MSFS forum, because as far as I can see in your Log, PSXT_MSFS performs ok.

Fair enough. Thanks. Agreed that PSXT seems to be working entirely as designed (and thanks for creating it, by the way!). I don't think there's anything wrong with the aircraft.cfg files (they're straight from the IVAO matching package), so I do still suspect this is something fundamental about the way MSFS handles injected traffic. Anyway, thanks again for taking a look at this.

You could try the Liveries Megapack instead of the IVAO package like I do ( and recommended in my PSXT_MSFS documentation ...).

The way aircraft liveries are defined in MSFS is very different from FSX/P3D.  Maybe the IVAO package conversion is not yet right

This is a known shortcoming of the MSFS engine. It has been discussed in several topics, and also by AIG. Here is my latest post in one of the forum topics on this issue:

https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/ai-engine-is-now-substituting-aircraft-of-the-same-model-with-a-different-livery-when-in-offline-ai-mode/393601/16?u=bondedleader221

I really hope ASOBO will fix this.

Note that this is NOT exactly the same issue as the "random liveries show up" (although it's very likely related somehow). The liveries I'm seeing that PSXT injects aren't random, they're just "flattened." In other words, if what should be seen is:

A320: American
A330: Lufthansa
A380: Air France
B738: Southwest
B738: United
B777: Ethiopian
B777: United

You might get this:

A320: American
A330: Lufthansa
A380: Air France
B738: Southwest
B738: Southwest (repeated)
B777: Ethiopian
B777: Ethiopian (repeated)

If you load it again, it might be that you get all United 738s and all United 777s. That's the random element, but note that in that scenario there should be at least one of that livery for that type visible. You don't end up with e.g. Southwest B738s at an airport in China or Spirit A320s in Australia. But you might end up with 20 Air Algerie A320s at EDDF because every Lufthansa A320 is showing that livery in addition to the single correct Air Algerie A320...

Looking at the IVAO packages, I noticed that one thing they don't do that's a no-no for the MSFS SDK is there's only one model folder per aircraft type, rather than (and this is silly) a model folder for each texture folder. That could potentially explain this behavior, I think. But long-term Asobo really needs to remove that requirement, which adds totally pointless bloat.

James
