ATIS - Live Weather - Can a MOD do this?

Recommended Posts

Could anyone integrate the real world ATIS reports and "stream" them into the simulator when we tune our radio to any particular ATIS frequency? Surely this can be done - the MOD gurus have done some fantastic and incredible things thus far... this would "fix" our ATIS issue and be more realistic too! Especially once ASOBO fixes the LIVE weather feature. I don't know the first thing of programming something like this..

When I'm flying in the sim and need ATIS report, I just open in browser. Today I flew to KORL and used this:

You would need permission from the owner of liveatc and he is not willing to grant that permission. It was tried before to use the site for ATC chatter... unfortunately....

ATIS/AWOS is greatly flawed in MSFS, among other attributes. It is not limited to ATIS/AWOS. Live weather is only accurate in some world regions.  And baromaetric pressure for avionics settings is still flawed at altidudes below 18,000.

This is not yet a simulator. It is not yet capable of use as a trainer.

D ATIS is becoming more widely used. I just use ForeFlight for everything. I think ASOBO will fix the WX issues in due time.

I believe they have twice said with previous updates they had it fixed.  Now its back on the list for SU 4,5,6.  And in response to the request to open it up to 3rd party developers the response is Not Planned.

I am not certain that they understand.....

I still don't get the obsession with wanting sim weather to 100% match ATIS/METAR.

Those reports can be hours old and are just a snapshot of what the weather was like at that point in time & often a snapshot of a particular part of the airfield.

There's a weather system revamp coming later this year.

I guess I've been extremely lucky, but in most cases, the ATIS reports I've received while flying w/Live Weather active have either been spot-on or very close to the metar report.  I did have a situation today where it started out fairly close to the report for my destination, then changed about 100 deg on prevailing wind when I was beginning the approach.  This actually may have been accurate, but my wife was calling, so I went ahead with the extreme crosswind.  😏

If I can't tune ATIS for my arrival from a decent distance, I access an online source for the current metar.  If I happen to be flying an aircraft with the PMS GTN750 installed, it's even easier.  I call up the current metar for my destination with a few taps on the MFD and I'm good-to-go.

The GTN750 lets you bring up METAR but there are a few issues, all unrelated to the GTN750 mod which is fine.

  • The first is that METAR as mentioned above can be up to 24 hours out of date.
  • The second is SIM live weather does not necessarily match METAR anyway.
  • The third is that not all airfields have METAR available.

Its not an obsession when its not even close.  And fully embarassing when the dew point is reported as several degrees higher than the temperature and clouds are reported by ATIS when the skies are clear, or at altitudes where there are no clouds, even in the sim.  Yep.  Reporting clouds that are not even in the sim itself, much less in real life reports.

Also considering that the "live weather" has been "frozen" and stuck on a 12 hour loop since 16 May, it's hard to believe anything would match ATIS at this point. Unless one is using REX Weather force or the freeware weather METAR program or the weather in said area just happens to be the same as it was on 16 May?

when it works, it is unbeatable, just beautiful

I just wish that I could query the sim wx at a specific point and/or sim metar at any airport in the sim on demand.

I completely agree about the clouds, however simconnect does not have a atmospheric environment variable for “dewpoint”. It never has had such a variable - dewpoint does not exist in FS9, FSX or P3D either. Although dewpoint is part of a standard METAR report, in MSFS (and all preceding MS/ESP sims) there is no place to store the value, which is probably why they use a fake dewpoint. Even if they did extract the dewpoint from the same r/w METAR they are now using for airport wind, temperature and pressure, at this point in time, it would have no effect on the injected weather.

LOL!  I agree 100%, so why inject into ATIS something so embarassing?  These are mostly innocent game developers and if project lead does understand aviation, sees this, and does not take corrective action then it begs the question of is this a _____  or is it a _____.  I will not fill in those blanks because I do not want to foster another of those raging arguments.

Lets see what this Tuesday brings.
